Just started ham with Tech license in June 2011 with VX-7R HT unit on 2M hanging out my upper window for club net night. Have a slim-jim now and can at least stay in house. Now have a mag ant. for car roof, cig power adapter, and mike and am learning to use repeaters when traveling. Little 5 watt does OK. Was very interested in all this and had Extra license by end of August, 2011. Got myHF station on air Nov. 11, 2011. Operate a FT-450D barefoot with a 80M OCF dipole 40 ft above ground over my house. N/S location. I am in a bit of a valley but right next to Pony Creek which is tidal influenced (some salt water). This may be a help. Member of Coos County Radio club and thanks to them for helping with advice regarding equipment selection and installation details. Other activities enjoyed are dune riding in the jeep (we have some the best dune areas in the US I believe), handgun shooting sports and anything to do with dogs. I am a civil engineer and have worked for several small consulting engineering firms during the last 35 years. Bet I will be at that for the next 9 or 10 years too. Have enjoyed making contacts around the country and even a few in Japan. As I learn more, hope to get the most out of this radio with different (higher) antennas and maybe a tad more power. Got my new call sign W7ARF, Dec. 20, 20011. That's Whiskey Seven "ARF" (imagine dog barking sitting next to Seagrams 7 bottle - HI HI). Previous call sign was KF7QPD. Have a good day and a better tomorrow. 73 everyone.
