 Nostalgic Trip Down Memory Lane

In 1952, when I was 8 yrs old, I became interested in an old short wave radio of my Grandmothers.  Listned to it when ever I was at her house. When I turned 12 I became a Boy Scout.  Scout Master lived next door to my GM.  One of the troops first activities was to build a crystal set with "cat wisker", coil and slider.  Used my old bed springs for an antenna.  Within a couple of years got GM's old radio...strung a wire out the basement window, up to the house eve and as high on the corner phone pole as I could get.  One summer day in 1958, I heard VR3B from Fanning Island on 20m.  Sent a home made card but never received a return.  In the '60's listened to "Blackie", K6HLH on 14.175 a lot.  Found out I a had a Great-Great Uncle, Charles Nash, W7PIM, that was a ham operator and he lived about 2 miles from me.  Went and talked to him.  He was an old time telegraph radioman and only operated high speed CW passing messages.  I missed a BIG opportunity there. I was hooked but CB radio hit and I went that direction for a couple of years.  Went to work in '67 for AT&T as C.O. Tech. and the Amateur Radio spark was rekindled again but not enough to get a license....I was still busy being single.  1970 got married and got my Novice ticket....WN7PRY....got on the air with Heathkit DX-40 Tx and a National NC-98 Rec.. Made about 50 contacts over the next 12 months.  No time for radio......building AT&T career.  Promoted to sales department in Cupertino, CA in '73.  1974 - 1976 slid over to PT&T sales for cross training.  Worked with an active ham.......rekindled spark for DX.  Bought a used Dake 4A line, got a new ticket, WN6GEC, got a building permit for 50' tower.....dug hole......dropped in bottom section of Rohn 25 and poured concrete.  Note: Today that house is 4 blocks from Apple Headquarters Campus and you would never be able to get a permit now to put up a tower.  Shortly after, back with AT&T, I was promoted to National Account Manager and relocated to Phoenix, AZ.  Arrived June 1st.........just about died from the heat.  Dumped the family and furniture off and was off for training......meetings......customer contacts all over the U.S.  Too busy for radio again.  Couple of years later wanted out of the fast paced rat race where 3 seconds was to long to move data from one coast to the other and back.   Moved to Heber City, UT and started building a house.......just me, the wife, and 3 little kids.........from scratch, on 10 rural acres.   Got another new ticket.....KC7AKJ......No time for radio.....to busy building house.....Sales Manager for AT&T in Utah. Went through AT&T divestiture in 1984. Promoted to Regional Tech Support and again later to National Sales Manager.  Retired in 1991 and started own business. Sold business in 2010.  Wife said to me one day "you know you have always wanted to get back into Ham radio, so why don't you take the money from the sale of the business and build a station". So WE did.  I upgraded to General and started working on learning how to do a HFTA of my location.  Upgraded to Extra and applied for my GG-Uncles license.....W7PIM.  We then started aquiring STUFF......U.S. Tower HDX-555, 110' Rohn 45, 120 Rohn SSV, Flex 5000A,  PalstarAT4K tuner, Alpha 87A amp, SteppIR DB-36, Self cobbled PC to run it all.  Still working through tower install, DB-36 and Alpha set up.  Currently using Flex, AT4K, 40m EDZ antenna fed with home brew 600 ohm ladder line.  Hardest part has been getting rid of RF in the shack,

U.S. Towers HDX-555 Project  (PROJECT COMPLETED)

16 yds of concrete and lots of steel later and base is in.  Designed to handle a larger crank up if I decide to change out tower.  Had new bearings machined into the sheeves and there ready to go.  Need to connect tower to base and pull tower sections out inorder to replace lift cable.  Lift winch needs to be replaced with something heavier duty than the original 1500 lb winch.

Tower Raising Fixture Project  (PROJECT COMPLETED)

Purchased steel to fabricate tower raising fixture. Using Fulton K1500 winch from tower on fixture and putting an SA12000AC winch on tower.  This winch has a lifting capacity of 2700lbs. (overkill)

Tilt Plate Project    (PROJECT COMPLETED)

There is a great aluminium supplier in Salt Lake and I picked up more than enough 1/2" 6061T to fabricate a good heavy duty tilt plate for the HDX-555 and DB-36.

SteppIR DB-36 Project    (PROJECT COMPLETED)

As soon as the tower and tilt plate are finished the DB-36 goes on.  Need to get cables etc....etc trenched into the tower.

110' Rohn 45 Project                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 U.S. TOWERS HDX-555

The base of 8 yds of concrete was poured and the pin was set.  Need to get the guy anchors placed.  This project is down the road a bit for now .

120' Rohn SSV Selt Supporting Tower Project   I have all of the sections but this project is going to have to wait.................toooooooooooooo much to do.
