Ham Member Lookups: 2072

I grew up in Dayton, Ohio, received an early exposure to the many facets of ham radio through Hamvention, and was licensed as WN8JOH in 1971 at age 17.  Due to a chronic lack of HF antennas, my activity over the years has been largely VHF/UHF FM voice and packet radio, with occasional periods on HF as antennas permit.  I am particularly interested in space operations: I’m a member of AMSAT, do some portable satellite operating, and volunteer on the ARISS program (serving as AMSAT-NA's U.S. Delegate and a telebridge operator for K6DUE at Goddard Space Flight Center, among other roles).  I am also active in RACES.

I work as a technical writer.  I hold a degree in electronics and spent 10 years in engineering work. My main interest outside ham radio is science fiction (reading and attending/running conventions).  I also have worked as ground crew for hot-air balloons, and juggle occasionally.

My QSL card shows photos of my grandfather Robert Frey, 8AAS, and his station in 1920.  He started in ham radio before World War I and was a member of the Gem City Wireless Club in Dayton.
