I was originally licensed as WN9PQY in 1965, then WA9SXQ, KF9FU, and finally W9OO. Growing up with friends like Tom, WA9QQI, Greg K9GC, Bruce KD0KCF. and others in Riverdale, IL--where hams were aplenty--gave us quite a stepping stone into the hobby.  My brother Joe, WB9KXI, kept our old Swan 500 warm at home in the '70's.  One high point in ham radio was running KG4EQ in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in 1971. Going from a low dipole to a tribander atop a 120 foot telephone pole overlooking the ocean was quite an experience, especially climbing the pole with spiked shoes. Winning the ARRL Sweepstakes for the SE division was uplifting, but moreso the good spirit amongst contesters then such as Chip, then K7VPF of W7RM fame and others.

Otherwise I and my good friend, Jim, WO7V, ran over 10,000 pieces of traffic to the states that year, plus made 25,000+ QSOs--there was nothing much to do on our free time! The help we received from USA hams lifts me to this very day! Picture below shows our two telephone pole towers with me on top of the radio hut. You can't see the land crabs, scorpions, snakes and lizards, though!

Present occupation: Ant farm salesman (door-to-door). :-)

Award Numbers: USACA: (all counties) 609, 2nd time 104 3rd Time 230, Bingo 28, 10-10: 9973, VP 513, ISSB 6979, GERITOL 1696, DIR 179, QCWA 26005, FISTS: 2362, OOTC 4622, HHH 927, SKCC 13315, DIG 6376,  9 band WAS, 8 band dxcc.

KG4EQ 1971

Me at the Collins radio console--it was totally staged to appear cool--it was 100-plus degrees (F) in that shack! The rigs would often fill up with moths and bugs and land crabs would saunter into the station for a visit.

County hunting took my heart later. Mobile trips across the country with my "goal post" antenna and visits with hams along the way gave me a interesting view of Americana not seen on the interstate roads.
