W9RUK/AFA2RU:  I am active in Air Force MARS for the North East Area Morning Net.

Rig is YAESU FTDX3000D, ICOM IC756PRO(MARS), LDG AT-600PRO  to OCF Windom at 35 feet. Enjoy DXing, Contesting(just for fun), and Rag chewing. Operate mostly  20, 17, 15, 12, and 10 meters on CW & SSB.

I had a stroke 4/1/2013 which left my right hand doing its own thing. I can not operate my key on CW, but use the coded messages on the remote by pushing the approprite button for quick contacts. Wish I could rag chew on CW, but do what I can! Still chase DX using this method.

Originally licensed in 1960 as KN9YPT in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Most memorable experiances came during my Novice career. I made many friends and enjoyed so many rag chew contacts. The slower paced Novice band was a great place to enjoy, gain experiance, and build the skills.

My current Vanity call belonged to my Uncle "Ike" Eichorst in Glenview, IL. He was licensed in 1920 as "9DVY" in Manitowoc, WI. He worked as an engineer for NBC first in Buffalo, NY and than in Chicago's Merchandise Mart, for over 40 years. Ike received the following distinction for his work in phone patching: Marvin H. (Ike) Eichorst of Glenview, IL, licensed operator of amateur radio station W9RUK, was honored by the US-Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names, with the naming of an island, "Eichorst Island", just off the coast from Palmer Station. He handled radio traffic between points in the United States and the Antarctic especially Palmer Station, KC4USP, during the period 1964-72.

I wished to preserve his call and the heritage that goes with it,and took it in preference to my original call of K9YPT from Sheboygan, WI.

Finally, after 48 years, I decided to  make the final step to Extra Class License, and did so on 2/7/2008. I had become very complacent in using only SSB, but this has definitely added to a much greater use and appreciation of CW, as I prowl the lower edges for new Entities!

73 & thanks for the contact,

Mike W9RUK
