The wooded ridge shown in the photo is located above the Sangamon River, and is just across the river from the New Salem State Historic Site in rural Menard County, Illinois. New Salem is the location of the log cabin village where Abraham Lincoln established himself in business as a young man and read law before entering politics. Hidden in the trees are the antennas of WA9AQN, on ground where it is likely that the man who became the 16th US President had walked. I will be happy to confirm contacts for Menard County, Illinois, sase not required.

Old Pals Reunite

Fifty-three years ago (counting back from 2014!) two high school buddies decided to become radio hams.  Mike Rosenhouse, who was to become KN9CDX, then K9CDX, and now K2CDX, signed up for a class at the local hi-fi/radio/tv shop.  I thought, "Hey, I can do that!"  And I worked from the ARRL books to try to catch him.  He beat me to the Novice test by a couple of months and landed a real call.  Several months later, when the FCC had exhausted the unissued K9 series, I landed an early WA9 call.  We went separate ways to college, and although we had discussed going to law school together, events prevented that from occurring. Our lives had taken different directions. Mike's radio license lapsed (in those days you had to swear to a certain minimum amount of actual operating time and to your continued proficiency in Morse), then, with the approach of retirement age Mike's interest was re-kindled. But he had to re-test, so he took the exams and came out an Extra, and because of the vanity system he was able to re-claim the CDX suffix, but in 2-land, where he resides.  Mike is primarily a CW operator, and his music skills provided a firm foundation for the speedy recovery of his ability to send very clean Morse on his new Vibroplex Original bug.  We hadn't seen each other since about 1968 or so, but it sure is great to get back together. Mike, and his family, swung through my part of the woods in August 2014.  Welcome back to real HF radio, Mike!
