I became interested when I was in high school. A kid named Riddick Gruters had a amateur radio license and I would go to his house and listen to him operate his CW station and talk to people. I never did learn morse code. When I went into the navy they give us a test in boot camp and I remember them sending the morse code on the test, I guess to see if you could copy to become a radio operator.

I finnally became a ham operator in 1974. I have enjoyed many contacts both local and DX.

I now have a new (to me) radio that a good friend sent me from Lake Havasu City, AZ. It is a Kenwood TS-50 with the Kenwood AT- 50 antenna turner..

I tried a slinky, but could not get it to work! Think I will try to convert it back to a toy so it will not create problems for another ham!

Since moving to the new address I have only the Carolina Windom antenna up. I am thinking of putting up the ground mounted AV14AVQ Hygain vertical but don't have that much room for ground radials. Most of the on air time will be with the carolina windom antenna until summer.

I have made some nice QSOs with this antenna on CW. The 20 mtr band is pretty good and 40 mtr at night.  Windom works very well and can work the WARP bands with it.

As of June 6, 2014 I have a SKCC #12437 and hang out on 10, 15, 20 ,40 meters around the 050 to 060 Mhz.

I enjoy working CW, RTTY, HF Phone and two meters. CW is my favorit mode though. I used to belong to NAVY MARS in the late 70s and early 80s.

Other hobbies are Astronomy, woodworking, hunting and fishing and Oh yes I play a mean finger style guitar.
