Ham Member Lookups: 1000

I was first licensed as a novice (WN7ECW) in 1976 as a 15-year-old in Corvallis, Oregon.  I received my general class license in 1977 and have been WB7ECW ever since.  I tested for my extra class license in August, 2015 and officially received my upgrade on September 1, 2015.

I have been on and off the air since 1976, with various rigs including a Drake TR4c and various antennas including a homemade 3-band, 2-element quad.  Life got in the way after the early 90's and I was rarely active.  I most recently got the urge to get back on HF after being a beta tester for a tremendous Ham Radio simulator called HamSphere 4.0.  This VOIP application uses very realistic propagation and antenna characteristics and is a great teaching and learning tool for both licensed and future hams.  The experience and thrill of DX'ing on HamSphere 4.0 was so realistic that it spurred me to get back on real HF too.

I purchased a used Icom IC-706mkiig in the late summer of 2014.  I set up this mobile rig as my simple base station here at my home in Battle Ground, Washington.

I then took several weekends and put up my long-dreamed-of 160M Sky Loop antenna.

On June 10, 2016 I took delivery of my first ever brand new HF rig -- the new SDR-based Icom IC-7300.  I think I'm really going to like this radio.  It has become my primary rig.

This modest station (100W and just the one antenna with tuner) has worked well for me.  I enjoy DX'ing even though it is sometimes hard to compete with the stations running more power and better antennas.

73 and hope to catch you on the air.  If your antenna is temporarily down or you've moved to a situation where you're shut down for now on HF, maybe I will catch you on the virtual radio waves on HamSphere 4.0.  Maybe we'll even talk to each other on both HF and HS4.0!
