Hello! Welcome to my Bio page.
  • I was born on President Lincoln's birthday - Feb.12,1944 in (Corydon, Ky) I grew up in Kentucky, attended Barber College in Decatur, Illinois in 1963 and spent 6 yrs in the Illinois National Guard (64-70) I married in 1966 and started work in the Cable Television Industry. (Cox Comm.) in 1973. I retired from Cox Communications Oct 2003 after approx 30 years with Cox.
  • I obtained my first license, WN9JZF (Novice) in 1963. I operated out of Olney, Illinois for one year which was the maximum time limit on Novice. My Novice station was an Ameco AC-1 and a Heathkit AT-1 transmitter and a Hallicrafters S-120 receiver. I managed to work "almost" all states with 15 watts. I still have my old log book & all my QSL cards I received as a novice.
  • I upgraded to General class license while living in Vincennes, Indiana  and I received the callsign of  (WB9AZQ) I upgraded my station to a Knight T-60 Transmitter and a Hammarlund HQ-110.
  • I upgraded to Advanced class license a few years later and kept the same callsign.
  • After 54 years of continuous operating my favorite band & operating mode is still 40 CW!  About the only time I get on voice is an occasional check-in on the 3980 Tennessee Fone Net. I do enjoy making a few occasional contacts on PSK.
  • Most of my operating is done these days with the following radios: An Elecraft K2, Icom IC706Mk2G, Icom-740, Kenwood TS-450s, Ten-Tec Omni-D, 2 Ten-Tec Triton IV's (my favorite rigs for CW) and a set of Kenwood 599D twins that I purchased new in 1978. I also have an old Swan rig - a solid state Swan 100MX.  I have several vintage receivers, a Hallicrafters S-40B, and a Drake 2A
  • I enjoy working QRP too. My QRP rigs include a pair of Elecraft K-1's, Ten-Tec Argonaut 505, Ten-Tec 40M Xcvr, MFJ-9020, MFJ-9040 and a MFJ Cub 40 Meter CW Xcvr. I also have 2 or 3 QRPp kits I haven't assembled yet. I like to operate around 7040.
  • A few keys I own- A Vibroplex 50th Anniversary Vibrokeyer (Ser.# 003) And I have several old hand-keys including a  J-38 that need to be used more!
  • HF antennas in use here:  G5RV Multi-band dipole about 40 feet high. 40 Mtr Inv.Vee 30 feet high, 80 Mtr Inv. Vee 40 feet high. I use a Ground-plane antenna 25 feet high for 6 meters. I'm hoping to install an AP8A Cushcraft Vertical later this year.
  • For local QSO's, I operate 2 meters with a Kenwood TM-281A base/mobile. I also have several HT's, (2) Baofeng UV-5R, a UV-3R and a Standard C508A.  I use an AEA "Isopole" antenna on 2-meters. It's omni-directional & not very high but works well for close-by repeaters & direct communications.
  • I'm a member of ARRL, 10/10 #38203, NAQCC #2059, SKCC #9315, ARES and Cumberland Plateau Amateur Radio Club (http://www.cparc.net)
  • Other hobbies & pastimes include: playing with Computers and old Communications receivers, Steel Guitar shows, buying & selling on E-Bay and of course HamFests.
  • After living & working in the New Orleans, LA area for 25 years we retired and moved back north to Crossville, Tn (Sept 2006). Our move back north was a couple years earlier than we anticipated due to Hurricane Katrina.
  • See you on the bands! I spend most of my time around 7040 khz (40 meters) "CW" of course.
  • By the way, I enjoy swapping QSL cards and I QSL 100% No SASE needed. I prefer paper QSL's. SWL reports are also welcome. I was a SWL listener before I got my Ham license. Also, I welcome QSL's from QRP stations!
