Randy, WW7ZZ, retired from Rockwell Collins Head-up Guidance Systems near Portland, Oregon, in 2013 after over 20 years of work with automated guidance, and statistical system performance studies, for aircraft landing systems.  Randy was an Engineer-of-the-Year in 2009, and his 2006 patent “Enhanced Vision System and Method for an Aircraft”, US 8,830,143 B1 was issued by USPTO in 2014.

Randy is a veteran of the Army Security Agency (ASA), a recipient of the Legion of Merit, and a holder of the Freedom's Foundation Medal. Randy has been involved with HF communications for over 55 years, beginning as an SWL at a young age with a Hallicrafters S-38E. Later, Randy became a registered Short Wave Monitor with certificate WPE8ASA (curiously).  Randy has been involved with Ham Radio off and on for about the same period of time, with his first ARRL membership in 1969, just before his real-life ASA adventures.

Special interests include - antenna design, HF antennas, digital imaging, and digital methods for RF reception (SDR) and RF signal generation (DDS).  Some of Randy’s earlier work and papers on the use of direct digital synthesis techniques in telemetry systems relied on Amateur experiences, at one point citing (the then) over 20-years of work in the digital synthesis field by Hams including many years of QST article references.

Randy is a Life Member of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), and a member of the Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB).

Working the Collins Amateur Radio Club (CARC) station in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; headquarters city for Rockwell Collins.   That rig with Art Collins former callsign (W0CXX ) is allegedly one of his former personal-use S-Line stations!

Randy has a considerable background with Telemetry Systems in applications ranging from hard-wired monitoring (including patient monitoring) to airborne encrypted S-Band performance data systems for missile and aircraft flight test, with published papers through the International Telemetry Foundation (under the auspices of the Instrument Society of America).
