Welcome to the mountains of Western North Carolina.  The picture is of Hookers Falls in the Dupont State Forest a few miles west of my home.

I became a ham in 2011 at age 70, (Extra 2012) mostly as an excuse to build stuff.  Mostly my projects fall into the “ugly but it works” (See Picture) category, but sometimes they don’t work.

My rigs are an Elecraft KX3 and a Yaesu FT857D.  I use them in my shack as well as for portable operation.  The main antenna at my shack is a G5RVjr and I use single band inverted V dipoles for portable operations.   Being a little deaf from working in cotton mills as a kid, I mostly use the digital modes.

In order to keep the grey matter from turning to _____[ Insert your choice of a disgusting substance here], I have started working on Morse code.  As of August 2014, I have around 70 CW contacts.  I go on the air at 11 WPM but practice at 13.  The progress is slow but positive.
