The ZD8VHF beacon was originally established in 1989 thanks to Mike, G3JVL.
Ascension is a place where people come/go with work contracts and by 2000 the beacon had been neglected. Chris, G3WOS noted during his 2000 ZD8SIX DX-pedition that the antenna system has collapsed. Mike, G3SED at Nevada Radio UK donated a new 5/8 antenna and thanks to Jonny, ZD8KW and Lenny, ZD8LJD, the antenna was installed in 2001.
In 2005 while resident on Ascension, I rebuilt the beacon electronics using a modified Motorola M110 low-band (66-88MHz) transceiver and the original morse keyer. The beacon is 10W with on/off keyed morse.
The beacon is located in a water pumping station on the side of Green Mountain at something over 2,000ft ASL. The site has a fabilous view of the horizon from NE anticlockwise to the W which us great for Europe, North American, the Caribean and northern South America. The main summit of Green Mountain is to the E presenting a sizable blockage in all other directions.
I last saw the site in 2014.
