I first became involved with Amateur Radio in the mid 1970's at the age of 15 after a five year interest in Radio which started with building crystal sets and running antennas from my bedroom window to the tree on the other side of our section.  I was only active for two years before study then family took over.  I have re-kindled my interest again in March 2014 and am currently in the process of building up a station and trying to play catch up with the vast number of changes that have occurred over the years.

Currently my shack consists of 3 HF rigs, a Kenwood TS 590SG, an ICOM 7100 and a Kenwood TS450.  I have a Yeasu FL-7000 Linear which I have still be get "on-line" .  My "second" shack in the garage has an Alinco DX77 and ICOM 207.

I am learning (slowly) about the digital modes, DStar, Fusion and DMR.  I have a high power DStar "hotspot" operating on 144.550MHz.  It consists of a DVRPTR, Odroid C1 and a commercial Tait FM radio.  My shack DStar and UHF radios are an ICOM IC-2820 and the ICOM 7100 with a Yeasu FT2900 for 2m.  I use  a CS750 Connect Systems and TYT MD380 handhelds for DMR through our local repeater.  I have played a little with a Fusion Wires-X "hotspot" which consists of a laptop, HRI 200 box and a Yeasu FTM100D.

Handhelds are a Yeasu FT1D (fusion), an ICOM ID51A+ (dstar), a Hytera PD785, an ICIM IC92 (dstar) and a little Yeasu VX2.  For mobile operation I use an ICOM 5100 and ICOM 208 with a Yeasu FT897 for portable HF with a Yeasu 817 for QRP operation when I am tramping in the mountains.

My son ZL2EP has now joined the hobby - check out his QRZ page..

Operating portable in Reefton South Island of New Zealand

Operating portable on 20m with an OCF dipole in Jan 2015 from a bush camp 10km West of Reefton - South Island of New Zealand.  Am modifying a little caravan at the moment to be a self contained mobile radio shack - Photo's to follow one day.

Old Antenna configuration - 7 band OCF, 66 foot Zep end feed and a 6/2/70cm vertical.  There is a tower now but doing some modifications so will wait till I get the modifications complete before I put up the new photograph.
