Thank you for visiting our QRZ.com website.

PI4HAL is the amateur-radio station on board of the steamship “SS Rotterdam”. The ship was build in the last part of the 1950's and was in use between 1959 and 2000 as passenger- and cruiseship for the Holland America Line (HAL).

The ship is now retired and stationary in the the harbour at the 3th katendrechtsehoofd in Rotterdam. The ship is now converted to a hotel, restaurant, congress center and museum. Every day visitors can do a tour around the ship on there own with a audiophone (recommended) or with a guided tour.

About 5 years before the opening in 2010 two radioamateurs (PH2CV and PA3ABP (SK)) made contact with the owner of the ship to ask if it was possible to activate the former wireless station with a amateurradio station. After a good presentation and good workplan they agreed and now years after the first contacts, we are now part of the team of volunteers of the SS Rotterdam.

The station has a radio shack behind the ships-bridge and is part of all the tours. This means a lot of people pass our radioshack during opening-hours and we have lot's of possibilities to show what we are doing. We had some request from radio clubs to visit the ship and radio shack and we always do our best to operate the station if we know that we are getting visitors.

Old workers of Radio Holland (a big radiotransittor supplier) made a nice museum on board of the “Rotterdam” that is very close to our radio shack. Here you can see some old radioequipment that was used in the years that the ship sailed across the oceans, including the big cabinets of the high power transmitters and antenna couplers they used in those times. But also the more modern Teletype machines and satellite communication equipment.
