Club Activities:

Several members of the Barrie Amateur Radio Club had fun activating lighthouse # ARLHS CAN-1042 located in Victoria Harbour on the shores of Georgian Bay. In this picture is Ian VA3QT at left and Al VE3RRD at right. Also taking part were Tom VE3THR, Pat VE3RNH and Ken VE3KDG.

Barrie Amateur Radio Club members activated a lighthouse in Victoria Harbour Ontario on August 3rd, 2014 for the Amateur Radio Lighthouse Society weekend contest. This is a "rear range" (rear leading) light which was shut down in the 1990's and is now a tourist attraction. Shown in the picture is Ian VA3QT at left and Al VE3RRD at right. Other club members taking part were Tom VE3THR, Pat VE3RNH and Ken VE3KDG. The rig was an Icom IC-7000 running off a 80 Ahr battery (with 13.8V boost-regulator), and the antenna was a half-sized (51 foot long) G5RV dipole up about 30 feet between two trees. We had a lot of fun and worked about 44 stations before calling it a day.

More information about this lighthouse can be found at: http://www.lighthousefriends.com/light.asp?ID=1063

ILLW - International Lighthouse-Lightship Weekend fun

After having so much fun activating the Victoria Harbour light for the ARLHS contest (2,3 August 2014), we decided to do it again for the ILLW event on 16, 17 August 2014. Once again we set up the half-size G5RV antenna up about 35 feet between two trees, with the primary station being an Icom IC-7000 at 100W and battery power. We made 48 contacts from Newfoundland in the east to to Manitoba in the west; and lots of contacts scattered around the U.S. (even a couple of DX stations in Slovenia and Italy). Hams taking part were: Tom VE3THR, Mike VE3MIC, John VE3FDZ, Jack VE3RDQ, Greg VE3YGG, Andy VA3TNE, Ian VA3QT, Al VE3RRD, Matt VE3MAT, and Bill VA3OL. Here is a picture of our QSL card we are using for both lighthouse events, we are also QSLing via eQSL.
