I passed the Class B Amateur License exam in February of 1941. After what seemed like an interminable wait, in May of that year I finally received my License with the Call Sign of W8VVD. The long delay was caused by security clearance paperwork. It was just before World War II and you had to be checked out by the FBI in order to obtain a License. In fact, you even had to include finger prints with your License Application!

One day, after I'd obtained my Commercial First Class Radiotelephone License, I walked into the Detroit FCC office and ASKED for an Amateur Class A License. I received it immediately without even taking an exam. Back then, if you held a Commercial Ticket, you were automatically entitled to a Class A Ham License.

I passed the Extra Class examination in May of 1973 and received my two letter call, W8QX, in September of that year. In those days you could not CHOOSE your call. You took the next one that the FCC had available. Luckily, I was pleased with the one I received.

I was a Charter member of the Catalpa Amateur Radio Society which was founded in 1948 and was President of the organization when it was Michigan's Largest Ham Club.

I have worked AM, FM, CW, DSB, SSB, Pactor and Packet. I've worked the North Pole, South Pole and Pitcairn Island. I contacted U.S. Space Shuttles and had numerous QSO's with the MIR Cosmonauts. I worked a number of stations on the last pass of AO-13 before it burned to a crisp in its final descent.

I've run everything from a few milliwatts on 40 CW with a transmitter powered by a toy steam engine to the legal limit with my home brew linear.

Besides ham radio my other hobbies include Photography, Rail Fanning, Circus Watching and, of course, Computer Use.

I enjoy creating web pages. You're invited to visit:
