CQP 2017 - The NZ6Q CQP Team is planning a strong activation of Merced County for CQP 2017,  We logged nearly 600 QSOs during our joint NPOTA / CQP-County Expedition to the Pinnacles National Park (NP-42).  We are looking forward to similar results this year!  October will be here again soon - and time for the greatest State QSO party of the year .... http://www.cqp.org/

73, John NZ6Q

I was born and raised in California and first licensed in 1974 as WN6IQZ. Credit goes to Lloyd Bumpus N6EL (now SK) for getting me into ham radio at age 12. I first watched him carry on a CW conversation with his twin brother (N5EL). After watching him work that Swan radio, I was hooked! CW has been one of my favorite modes ever since... I got my Novice License and built an HW-101 as my first "rig". Thanks to a lot of "elmering" from my brother Jim and another great ham neighbor, Cliff Kurtz, N6ZU (now SK) it actually worked. Cliff N6ZU passed away July 1, 2014.  He will be missed more than words can say...

I upgraded to Extra in 1989. I kept the WA6IQZ call for nearly 35 years until I saw the NZ6Q call on the FCC's website and figured it to be a good blend of my own call and the two great hams that got me started. Now the "new" NZ6Q continues to open a new chapters in my ham radio life - new club memberships, a new home and station and new opportunities - like my DX-pedition dream, more serious contesting efforts and more radio fun. I get a real taste of it every year activating "rare" counties with close friends in the California QSO Party.

Communicating is my life's passion, and amateur radio continues as the catalist. My first 'real' job was as a DJ in a local radio station when I was 16, then the youngest full-time E911 dispatcher hired by the Stockton Police Department at 18. For the next 25 years, I would build, manage and train dispatchers in communication centers in California, Ohio, Kentucky, Florida and Georgia. Today I work for Comcast as a Sales Engineer designing Ethernet Communication Services for mid-size and larger business customers. Check out my page on Linked-In for more work info.

My YL and I spent 10 years caring for my mother during her long fight against Alzheimer's disease (www.alz.org). I still work and live in the home in which I grew up in California, we hope to soon spend more time with children and grandchildren - now totalling nine (9)...

In ham radio, I stay active in ARES and as part of our local VE Team. I'm on 2 meters, 440 and HF when I'm mobile. I love contesting, chasing DX and just plain having fun on the radio. I love HF mobile. I'm always amazed that I can talk around the world while driving to the store. I just installed a CW keyer in the car - watch out!! On APRS? check out my mobile aprs here or portable here . APRS is a great marriage of GPS technology and Amateur Radio.

I'm a proud life member of the ARRL. If you're not, why not?

My Grandchildren - love them all!

Even with (March 2017) five grandsons, and four grand daughters, I still find time for this GREAT HOBBY! We have started offering HamCrams for new hams to get licensed in just a Saturday and Elmer University where we teach newly licensed Amateurs how to be better "ham" operators.  Checkout our club website at www.w6sf.org .

The NZ6Q station has 400 sq feet of "shack". There will be three operating positions, and eventually two towers. Hygain vertical on 160 - 10, and multi-band yagi's at 50ft on 40 - 10. After visiting the W7RN station, Amplifiers and QRO for each band is a must!

My first "DX visit-pedition to JA in November was an amazing experience - First to meet my new grandson Barrett and second to meet some of the many JA ham friends I have made over the years... It was great fun to enjoy ham radio from a whole different part of the world and to meet hams from around the world at the 2016 Asian-Pacific DX Convention in Osaka.

Back in California now and my adventures continue right here, on the back roads of California in my F-350 4x4 with 3 radios, 4 antennas, and my "best gal beside me" . .... .. .... .. (HIHI)
