FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, DECEMBER 13rd,2017

WHAT IS SANTA CLAUS PRIME TIME IN AMATEUR RADIO?

AS FINLAND’S CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS WIND DOWN, WE SLOWLY TURN OUR THOUGHTS TO SPREADING WARM CHRISTMAS SPIRIT.

The precise timing of Christmas celebrations varies from region to region. For some it’s Christmas Eve. For some Christmas Day. In some cases, it may even be later on in January when the Russian Father Frost makes an appearance. But in the world of Santa Radio prime time is this coming weekend – December 16-17.

During the first Santa week, some 18.000 QSOs were made and the competition in the ClubLog for Santa slots is fierce: www.clublog.org/charts/?c=OJ9X

Conditions so far have not been favorable towards North America, thus more fire-power will be directed towards the US now. Also, RTTY will be getting a big boost on virtually all bands as Santa may even jump into deep waters and join the OK RTTY Contest, for 24-hours; Saturday from 0000 UTC to 2359 UTC.

The overall target has been set to surpassing last year’s QSO total – 33.615. You have a major say in this!

We are proud to announce this year’s (2017) Santa team of fifty-two (52) members:

DJ5YL, OH0XX, OH1EG, OH1HS, OH1JD, OH1MA, OH1ND, OH1NOA, OH1NX, OH1RX, OH1TM, OH1TX, OH1XX, OH2BAD, OH2BC, OH2BCI, OH2BEE, OH2BH, OH2EUU, OH2FB, OH2FIB, OH2GEK, OH2HAN, OH2KI, OH2KM, OH2KW, OH2LU, OH2MA, OH2MZB, OH2PM, OH2TA, OH2XX, OH3JR, OH5BM, OH5BQ, OH5CZ, OH5NQ, OH5TS, OH6HZH, OH6KN, OH6MW, OH6KZP, OH6NVC, OH6VDA, OH7CW, OH7EA, OH7ER, OH7WP, OH7XI, OH8LQ, OH8NC ja OG9X.

These fine operators represent some ten (10) different clubs and have been in part selected based on their good operating skills as well as the force of their signals.

A few additional comments may be in order:
· The QSOs will be added to ClubLog with an approx. 24-hour delay – do not panic
· Dedicated specific band mode-stations cannot move as such, but other same band modes maybe QRV just around the corner
· If Santa Radio is calling a specific area, such as USA, please kindly cooperate and allow them to accomplish their mission
· See more details about “Finland 100-Years Award! in the QRZ.com – OJ9X
· If you expect Radio Santa to appear down the chimney – kindly leave some milk and cookies on the table
Merry Christmas to our Wonderful World of Amateur Radio and good luck to those who are keeping the dials lit for more Santa Radio slots.

DECEMBER 06.2017 - BREAKING NEWS FROM FINLAND -- FAR NORTH OF EUROPE

OJ9X QRV FROM DEC 6th THRU DEC 31st, 2017

Santa Radio, along with their head figure Santa Claus, are celebrating this December 6th and upcoming Christmas as a very special period for the Republic of Finland, OH-land. We invite you to join the party for the next 25 days. The OJ9X special call sign was released by the Finnish Regulatory Authority for this country-wide operation, which will see several radio clubs participating across all bands and modes. The first 100 scoring the highest number of bands/modes, with the top 10 from each continent, will qualify for the prestigious “Finland 100 Years -Award” signed by Santa himself along with the prime minister of Finland. At the same time the Finnish prime minister, Mr. Juha Sipilä, is a patron of this special event.

FINLAND AND THE PAST 100 YEARS

The famous Finnish parliamentarian Professor, the late Martti Tiuri said that Finland as a region was never intended for human habitation. So challenging was the setup, that along with the Aurora Borealis, even radio propagation was pushed to nil. But who said that life was meant to be easy? With hard work, Finns built their country in 100 years into the most modern western democracy. Today, it is called a model pupil within the European Union. While Finns stand tall today, being one of the soundest societies in the world, they also want to remember those thousands upon thousands that lost their lives securing Finland’s sovereignty.

With a unified force of 5 million inhabitants, the Finns have set their targets smartly and come up with impressive achievements in many walks of life, such as mixing a wide variety of traditional and high-tech Industries, nature, science, the arts and education. In fact, education is one of their strong export footholds today.

Finland’s foreign policy stands unmatched. They get along and work equally well with the East and West – staying outside of any and all military alliances. They even specialize in going out into the world to promote peace and peacekeeping, helping others live their lives in harmony, appreciating and respecting their identity and differences.

The former President of Finland, Mr. Martti Ahtisaari, while in office and thereafter, sported these valuable skills, and was recently honored with the Nobel Peace Prize. Martti acted as the UN Envoy to The United Nations Secretary General, drafting a roadmap for resolving conflicts and even creating new countries under the UN auspices. Countries such as Namibia (V5) and Kosovo (Z6) are bearing Martti’s initials and now enjoying peace while making a progress the same way as Finland once did.

Come by on all bands and congratulate the Finns and find your way into their hearts today with one of their S-Passwords: Santa, Sauna, Sisu, Sibelius and Suvivirsi – those five that truly make Finland tick!

THIS CAN BE A HUNT OF YOUR LIFETIME AS REPORTED BY ULI, DM5EE
CURRENTLY NUMBER FOUR (4) WORLD – WITH 17 SLOTS:

This is about the hunt and - as you can tell - it creates excitement. I started out with a few casual OJ9X QSOs last Friday evening but as more and more red squares on Clublog turned green, the competitive spirit arose and I have been trying to maximize the score since then. New QSOs don't necessarily come easy as a daytime job plus a family are keeping me busy and many opportunities to work OJ9X are being missed. The easy ones have been worked, now come the harder ones, the few band/mode combinations missing and - in particular - the band/modes yet to be activated. These will be on the high bands and with only weekend and evening activities possible, it will be a challenge to remain in the top crowd until the end of this activity. I'll try my best and I can honestly say that am enjoying this pre-XMAS competition.

73 and Thanks to Santa & Team! Uli DM5EE

BREAKING NEWS FROM SANTA RADIO

It was yesterday when OJ9X elves were going in circles with very disturbing news. YL operator was to enter this male dominated Santa scene. "No way" they were mumbling in same way as those monks at Mont Athos where the story is still circulating about mysterious lady entry to the monastery some 1500 years ago.
Yesterday it happened as Joana, DJ5YL set the Heill headset carefully on her ears and hairs and let the violin play! She took few on her transmitting frequency and then went split to make it more orderly. And typed skillfully the rolling pileup into OJ9X log with no hesitation. No sweat, no tears and the job got done while the elves were steering at her with eyes fully open!
Joana did break the ice and got fully accepted to the community of Santa Radio, OJ9X. She is great asset to those hairy voices that you have heard for a past two weeks.

Welcome to the party Joana!

HEARD ANOTHER DAY OVER THE LONG PATH ON 40M SSB AT SANTA RADIO

While a stream of European stations were bouncing in at Santa Radio, suddenly a mammoth signal from New Zealand was coming all over the place.
It was Holger, ZL2IO, Long Path, 23.000 kilometers away ……wishing a Merry Christmas from the opposite end of the world. Soon Birgit, ZL2YL broke the party and finally Xenia, ZL4YL came in with her sweaty voice. Who are these people that break the world with ease from such distance?
This is indeed a radio family who originate from Germany. They are not only very competitive bunch but they also offer their radio services to those who want to experience the beauty of New Zealand. www.kiwi-dx-lodge.com
You will meet them all at the WRTC2018 in Germany where dad, ZL2IO and daughter, ZL4YL will compete as team Oceania and Mom Birgit, ZL2YL and their other daughter Saskia, ZL2GQ support the team. It is all family affair!

MIKA, OH6NVC SANTA HERO FROM SANTA RADIO

Mika, OH6NVC has passed the 6000 QSO mark today on his personal account as part of the Santa Radio team. Mika has worked most of the U.S 20M CW contacts as his location and a huge antenna lay-out has helped him along the way. Huge number of towers. Yes Mika has made them all and many more!
Look at his story at www.qrz.com/db/OH6NVC
But a true hero at OH6NVC station is actually his wife Carita and two great kids, Satu (11) and Sampo (7). They certainly got enough of Santa this Christmas as Mika has pushed his all-out effort with much commented twist! Great Job Mika!

SANTA RADIO REMOTELY CONTROLLED FROM AUSTRALIA BY JUHA, OH8NC

As the mysterious Polar path exist in very Northern Finland, the Radio Arcala (OH8X) transmitters were typically remotely controlled from elsewhere in Finland.
To provide a contrast to a frozen tundra and snow and ice, the team has now established what they call mobile remote where you can hand-carry the K3/K0 anywhere and control your entire mammoth site from your smart-phone.
As Santa is a global figure so need to be the controlling Radio Arcala as well.
Picture shows Juha, OH8NC and his control head with blue ocean at the Gold Coast (VK4). You can catch Juha typically on 20M SSB from 2200 UTC, in Australian morning, when his fellow Finns are in their deep sleep!

OJ9X PASSED 100 2M EME QSO YARSTICK BY KARI, OH2BC

Good Old Moon is a mysterious subject in the outer space. It is steering at you just like a piece of cheese. As a part of Santa’s stationary you would realize that it is just moon that is guiding Santa’s journey around the world.
So it was only right to have moon as Santa’s reflector for 100 Earth-Moon- Earth VHF contacts made, covering all continents.
The screen-shot at K8DIO in Twinsburg, OH tells the story best!

Thanks for the EME QSO.  Great signal here through snow covered trees!

NIKO, OH5CZ  YOUNGEST OF THE SANTA RADIO TEAM

Niko devoted his school break for Santa Radio and scored almost 2000 QSOs, mostly on CW.  Niko is one of the bright stars for the future of slick operating out of Finland.  He will soon become more mobile as he would each 18 years of age and qualify for driving license. You will hear more on this young man.

Hello from the Offices of Santa Radio --- featuring the 2016 Activity

You may recall the great activity of OF9X back during Christmas 2016 when Santa and his twelve elves were penetrating the Christmas scene, and gave you and your children a chance say hello to Santa and find their way into the logbook of Santa’s elves. In fact, you took it so seriously that Santa is hereby presenting you his prestigious award(s).

In total the Santa-team made 33.681 contacts to 17,319 different households in 156 countries.Totally more than 1800 awards were released. It was a success by all accounts, especially since the radio propagation was not good. Almost all North American contacts (2400) were made remotely from the huge OH8X station just a stone’s throw from the Arctic Circle – using the mysterious Polar path. Santa was supported by Veijo, OH6KN; Juha, OH8NC and Kim, OH6KZP.

Overall the number of visitors to Finnish Lapland has risen by 15% by a recent season and in December alone more than 550 flights from outside of Finland arrived at the various Santa Claus airports. The Chinese in particular were arriving in huge numbers, and next season (2017-2018) it is expected that 50.000 Chinese tourists will travel here to experience this Christmas wonderland.

Santa Radio project was organized by a vibrant small team of Santa enthusiasts from the Radio Club of Pusula, OH9W, and technological support was provided by the Radio Arcala labs.

Thank you for your participation and once again congratulations on your great performance.
