Video Add-On Software for FreeDV Digital Voice
FreeDV plus Video adds a new dimension -- video conferencing -- to amateur radio operation on HF. Imagine a QSO where you're able to listen to and see the other operator!
FreeDV plus Video is a soundcard-based scheme for adding video, using a modified version of ZL2AFP's "FFT-TV" software. Using 66 sub-carriers (including FreeDV), the frame rate is only 1 frame per second, with 36-line resolution. Bandwidth is 3.5 kHz, so it can be used with some HF transceivers. The scheme is compatible with the "1600" mode of FreeDV. There is no need to build special hardware for FreeDV plus Video. For more information on FreeDV plus Video, go to: http://www.qsl.net/wa6nut/FreeDVplusVideo.html
A live stream is provided at http://batc.tv/streams/wa6nut so users can monitor their own FreeDV plus Video signals as received at WA6NUT on 14236 kHz. Click the link to check the status of the stream (at the request of the BATC, the stream is not left on 24/7).
Read about FreeDV plus Video in the Winter 2013 issue of Amateur Television Quarterly (Vol. 26, No. 1). For back issues or to subscribe to ATV Quarterly, go to http://www.atvquarterly.com
A more recent article is found in the March/April 2017 issue of QEX (Issue No. 301), published by the ARRL. For more information on QEX, go to http://www.arrl.org/qex
FreeDV plus Video is compatible with the newly-introduced FreeDV digital voice software ("1600" mode only). See http://freedv.org for more information.
