***BIG NEWS! September 18 2017 My daughter is now 4x5yl...first got her license at age 8...now 20 years later upgraded to General Class. Congrats Michelle!  I am so proud of you!***

*** JULY 16 2017...thanks for helping my daughter Michelle work enough QSO's to upgrade her license.  She was originally licensed in the USA at age 8.  Now she is upgrading her license to add HF privileges.  Thanks all those who worked Michelle when she was using my callsign.  After an examination, she will be eligible to change her callsign from 4Z7ADF to a new callsign. ***

From April 25 2017 to May 10 2017 I will be using a special event callsign 4X69KS.  This is a special callsign in celebration of Israel's 69 years of independence.  Please QSL direct or via the Bureau for this callsign 4X69KS.  QSL information for my home callsign of 4X1KS is listed below:

USA QSL Address (SASE or SAE $):   * QSL 4X1KS  good via Buro, LOTW, Direct..see instructions further down the page*.

Here's a little 20 meter transmitter that I built in May 2017.  It puts out 5 watts easily and with a few crystals I can cover all of

the 20m CW portion.  Worked a WA2 with no problem on May 7, 2017.  She's not very pretty, but she is "Elegant."

Check out this 1.5w transmitter mounted on a nice varnished piece of Olive Wood.  Getting good reports with

this QRP rig on 20m often.  I hope to work you too.

This is the homemade key that I use in the truck when I'm traveling around Israel.  I just disassembled, polished, and reassembled the key.  I made this key back in 2009.

Here's the key installed in my 2005 Isuzu D-Max.  Finally! A secure base for the key so I send without having the key moving all over the place.

The antenna back up on the taller tower.  Worked Western Australia 59+ on 11.12.2016 using my Collins KWM2-A on 20m.  Also on the tower is an 80-40 inverted Vee.

******See QSL instructions below.  I have a USA QSL address*****

November 28 2016...Antenna is now up 3 meters taller than before.  The noise level has dropped to S1 to S2.  What a difference!

November 20 2016  Just raised the tower by 3 meters.  Moving 80/40 vee up higher.  Hope that this will add something to the TX/RX.

The windspeed was gusting to 50 kph  up on the tower.  The gin pole is homemade in the shop.  On top of this tower is a Cushcraft A4S, an Alpha-Delta 80-40 inverted Vee, a 439mhz corner reflector for Allstarlink, and (soon) maybe a simple groundplane for 439 mhz.  The A4S is now about 18m above the ground.  The tower is on top of the roof balcony.  From the street level to the south, the antenna is about 25m up.  To the north about 18m up.   Also up on the roof is a satellite system which is 3 el. yagi for 144mhz, and a 13 element X-yagi for 435mhz.  I also have a 12 turn homemade helix for 435mhz which is not up.  Other antennas are not up at the moment, including a 23 element yagi for EME which is being worked on for the EME setup for 70cm...hopefully soon.  On HF the inverted VEE is now high up and is working well on 80 and 40.  The local noise level on 80 is high, so I plan to use my Wellbrook magnetic loop for receive on 80m to improve the noise figure.  Hope to see you on the bands.

November 6 2016.  Working off of battery power for fun.  Using Elecraft K2 that I built about 15 years ago.  Power source is a Trojan Deep Cycle 12v battery...putting out about 4.8 watts...mostly on 40m band.

July 27 2016...Working on getting together a 432 mhz EME station.  The components are long yagi, ARR preamp, Mirage 100w brick, and TS 790a transceiver.  Still working out the bugs.  I should be able to work the larger stations on JT65B and some on CW.  So far I am just starting to get this going.  Will keep everyone advised if there is success.

The new rig....IC-7300....during All Asian Contest June 18 2016

Occasionally you will hear my daughter 4Z7ADF working from my station 4X1KS as she is studying to UPGRADE her license to General Class.  So if you hear a YL using 4X1KS, then it is Michelle.

Lately I have been using this radio....recognize it?

********Now on satellites from KM71mw as of May 13 2016 after many years off the air.  435mhz antenna is a 12 turn helix made by W4AMI Bob Barbee SK.  A great elmer and man.  144mhz simple yagi********

Update as of April 4 2016....hurray...worked VK0EK  FT4JA  VK9CK  3C7A  5J0P and others recently.  Conditions might not always be spectacular but there is DX out there.

Update as of Mar 19 2016.  Sent out a lot of Bureau cards within the last 2 months. A LOT of cards.  Hope to get your QSL card also.

Update as of Dec 13, 2015.  Just worked ARRL 10m contest.  Only CT and FL worked in USA, but still worked some new ones on 10m CW..so that's great.  I really like the 10m contest..always have.  Hope everyone had a nice time.

Update as of Nov 5 2015.  Recently worked WAE and CQWW.  Highly recommended!  Winter rainy season has decended upon Israel.  It gets dark very early.  Despite this, 10m and 15m have had some nice openings so there is still plenty of DX to work out there.  10m was particularly open during the CQWW SSB contest.  If anyone needs a new band or mode, drop me an email and I will try to set up a sked.

****Will be working Holyland Grids Mobile quite frequently.  If you have a request for a specific Holyland Grid that you would like to work, send me an email.  If possible, I will arrange a sked to try to work you from that Holyland Grid while I am out mobile.  Email:  israelsteel@gmail.com**** ....August 23 2015

Israel has a very nice award called THE HOLYLAND AWARD.  Israel is sectioned into Holyland Grids. My grid, for example, is H16RA.  Work a number of 4X/4Z and you can qualify for this award. Here is where you can get information on this fine award:

                                   ******* IMPORTANT QSL INFORMATION ***********

1) If mailing a card direct to Israel

QSL Instructions for USA Amateurs:  Do not send greenstamps or IRCs.  In order to get a QSL you need only include a US Domestic first class stamp with your card.  Send only 1 proper USA first class postage stamp. That's all you need to get a card from me.

Alternate: USA QSL Route

2) Non-USA Amateur instructions

Use USA QSL route address listed above or you can send direct to Israel:

QSL Instructions for foreign amateurs:  I send out cards via the buro on a regular basis.  It is a REALLY GOOD IDEA to have an envelope at your country's buro.  You can also get a card directly by sending me $2 or an IRC (that is new) and an SAE.  If your country does not have a QSL buro, then I will also send a card directly to you as long as you include $2 or an IRC (that is new) and an SAE.

I am also on LOTW.  I recommend that all stations take the time to register with LOTW.  It's a little complicated, but you can get help from the ARRL to register and upload your logs.

Exchanging QSL cards is a very excellent tradition of Ham Radio.  I urge everyone to enjoy this long and treasured part of making a QSO complete.

Above is a stock photo of my boat which is a Sun Odyssey 40.  I sometimes work /MM from the boat named Sea Belle.  She is located in Ashkelon Marina which is on the southern part of the Israel coast on the Mediterranean.  The gear on Sea Belle is usually a Yaesu FT-900 with a wire hauled up the mast.

I try to be on around 0300 UTC from the home QTH on 14.260 to 14.280 for summer 2015, although I would like to make CW contacts around the same time if possible (also on 20m around 14.035 or wherever there is a clear spot).

My home station is 4x1ks and is located in the small village of Hashmonaim...Holyland Grid Square H16RA. We are located just about exactly in the center of the country, about 30 minutes either direction to Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.  In addition to radio and sailing, I am a   struggling banjo player.  My banjo is a Deering Goodtime II.  I also ride road bicycles semi-competitively (focus on "semi" or maybe "barely").  I've been riding Litespeed bicycles which are made by expert titantium welders from Tennessee...a first-rate, high-quality product from my old state.
