My name is Idris Alzakwani, Omani national by birth and living in Oman since then. I spent my childhood here in Oman, but started travelling since the age of 12 years. I have travelled extensively. I did my primary education in Bombay and Nasik in India; oxy-acetylene and arc welding in Alexandria, Egypt; AMIMI in the United Kingdom. I also lived on and off in the United States. While I was there I got used to the CB; and since then I just got very much interested in radio communications.

I started with Amateur Radio in 1984, was licensed in March of that year and holding the callsign A41KC. At that time there were hardly 100 hams in the country; but steadily that number increased. Now we even have many YL's as hams.

I started with a Kenwood TS-130 and a dipole long wire antenna with the SB-220. Then came the TS-930, Icom IC-735, IC-751, IC-765 with the IC-2KL. I was QRT for about 10 years; that is due to my nature of work and traveling. Since 2007 I am back on the air; it's good to be back though.

Right now I am using thefollowing gear:

  • Icom IC-7851 (this is the Icom Flgship I always wanted to own - accomplished)
  • Kenwood TS-990S (a very fine rig indeed)
  • Icom IC-7700 (another fine rig, after resuming my Ham Radio activities
  • OMPower Slovakia OM-2500A (works with all radios)
  • OptiBeam OB 11-5 (the best  antenna I have ever used)
In practice it is 11 element beam (+ 6 hidden sleeves for 12/17m) Meters
  • OptiBeam OB12-6  12 element Yagi 6 Bander, installed recently. I like this antenna because of its active 2 elements on 40 Meters.
    It is 2-2-2-2.5-3-3 active elements
  • OptiBeam OB1-40 - a rotatable dipole for 40 meters, that works great too
  • Yaesu FTDX-5000MP - the first Yaesu rig I am using since getting my ticket
  • Icom IC-7300 - SDR based Transceiver. This is a recent addition to the list
of equipment. I use it mainly for digital communications.

Oman is a diverse country and has all sort of terrains to offer - mountains, beaches, desert, plains. It has one of the best waterlife. Caving is very popular here, but not for the faint-hearted individual.  My hobbies include trekking, hiking, mountaineering, big game fishing among others.

I hope to catch up with you guys down the log.

HAPPY DX'ing... 73's de A41KC smiley
