Thanks for your QSO. I look forward to another QSO on another band or mode.

Recent Activity

2017

Looking forward to the Texas QSO Party and the Boy Scouts Jamboree On The Air.

Field Day was great fun at the W5IRP site. We had 26 folks stop by to check out the operation and Ham radio in general. We had a claimed score of 628. Great socializing and operating SSB, CW, and PSK31. Looking forward to next year.

In 2017 over the weekend of April 21st-23rd, I participated in the activation of K5T a Special Event station for San Jacinto Days commemerating the Texas victory over Mexican general Santa Anna in 1836 winning Texas Independance.

In 2016, I participated in several NPOTA Park activations, including Mission Delores SHS, El Camino Real de Los Tejas National Historic Trail, NPOTA TR 20 on September 15th and 16th and Big Thicket National Preserve NPOTA PV04  on December 14th.

We moved to the friendly town of Lufkin in the Piney Woods area of East Texas in early 2016. I am now a member of the Deep East Texas Amateur Radio Club (DETARC), the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES), and the Texas DX Society.

I am back on HF with a 9-band Butternut vertical and an all band G5RV dipole. I hope to get my tri-band beam and a 6 meter beam up this year.I operate CW, SSB, and several digital modes.  I especially enjoy chasing DX, IOTA stations, State QSO parties, and special event stations.

Basic information--

Howdy from Lufkin, Texas. I was first licensed in 1957 as KN0PYM in Minnesota. I've held the following calls K0PYM, W6SOT, K0PYM/KL7, DA2KR, W6SOT/LX, W6SOT/3A, W6SOT/MM2, ZL3/K0YY, Z2/K0YY, K0YY/7, K0YY/5, and my current call K0YY.

I've enjoyed the opportunity to operate from DX and portable locations. I've been able to operate aeronautical mobile, maritime mobile, RV mobile, and fixed and portable from a number of US and overseas locations.

I retired from the US Air Force in 1983. I was Air Force MARS station AA7BO in Germany. I was also stationed in Japan, California, and the Upper Penninsula of Michigan. I used to fly from Alaska over the pole to England. Two memorable events occured while working in Alaska. I operated from the Eielson Air Force Base MARS station in Fairbanks after the earthquake of 1964 and I ran a phone patch to my parents while flying at 40,000 feet from directly over the North Pole. After the Air Force, I worked for Martin-Marietta (now Lockheed-Martin) as a Systems Engineer at the Air Force Satellite Control Facility in Sunnyvale, CA.

I enjoy putting special event stations on the air including in the past K0Y from Elizabeth, CO, and K0YY/P from Bridge Island, US Island CO-12L from Steamboat Lake State Park in northern Colorado. I enjoyed participating in the Texas State Parks On The Air Program and look forward to putting on other Special Event stations.

My wife Marilyn KB0LJW and I lived aboard and cruised our Morgan 462 Ketch "SV Fantaseas" for 5 years up and down the west coast. I operated as W6SOT/MM2 while aboard.

I operate 80 meters through 440 MHz. I enjoy operating CW, SSB, FM, digital modes, DXing, and assisting with emergency communications. I am a member of the Angelina County Texas ARES group. I'm a member of the Mile High DX Association, The ARRL, and the Texas DX Society. I am a past member of the Alpine Mountain Rescue Communications Team and the Jefferson County Colorado Type 3 Incident Management Team Communications Unit.

I authored and published two Ham radio books, the Cruisers Radio Guide (for cruising sailers) and the Mobile Communications Guide.

See you on the air.

73 Roger K0YY, ex W6SOT & K0PYM
