I recently moved to Lilburn GA from NE Tennessee, originally from CT.  I was active in NE TN SKYWARN, military background from 1988-2000. First became interested in ham radio working with VHF fire/police scanners in the late '70s. First practical experience with HF radios was with AN/PRC-104 in 1988 as a member of MIARNG Co F 425 INF (LRSU). Other than jumping with it, or carrying it, I did not get to use it during missions. I later discovered I had 5 complete sets of GRC-213 HF radios in the MP company that I commanded, but again, did not get to use them much.

I always wanted to get licensed, and finally did so in the spring of 2011.  Original callsign of KK4BNU issued April 2011 as Technician. Changed to K1MSU Vanity Callsign on June 10, 2014.  Changed to vanity callsign K1CNF on June 1, 2011.  The callsign represents the district where I first became interested in Ham radio, and the suffix is the abbreviation for the Cherokee National Forest, where I worked for 10 years.  Upgraded to General on June 14, 2011. VE status in July 2011. Upgraded to Amateur Extra on June 5, 2012. My primary mode is phone, but my goal is to learn CW. I began occasionally using HF digital modes in September of 2012.

Member of OMISS #7848, ARRL, and ARES.

Current equipment includes a Ten-Tec 599AT, a Kenwood TM-V71 Dual bander (2M/440) and a Kenwood TH-K2AT 2M handheld. My base station antennas include a GAP Challenger (Multi band vertical), a RadioWavz OCF 80m Dipole Inverted Vee and a Diamond X-300A on a 20 foot mast for 2M/440. I also use a Tigertronics SignaLink USB to connect to a Mac for digital modes in my station.

I am restoring a A/N GRC-213 surplus radio on loan from DoD for use by USFS during Wildfire Contingencies. US Forest Service does not currently use HF as a primary mode, but I like to experiment with local EMA with it.
