Update:  Removed the random wire in favor of the end fed half-wave.  Could not tune 30 m but better performace on remaining bands.  Seemed to be a higher efficiency antenna, with received signals up to 6dB better on an A/B comparison.  [11/12/17]

Update:  Just installed a 40/20/15/10 end-fed half-wave and am evaluating it against the end fed random.  More to follow. [8/8/17]

Update:  I'm becoming interested in wire antennas, especially since I don't have room for tower and beam.  The latest is  the 54 ft random wire.  With the 9:1 autoformer, the Yaesu internal tuner produces 1.0 to 1.1 VSWR matches on all 8 bands from 40 thru 6 m.  Amazing.  NU4N was first contact with this new antenna.

Brief bio:

I got my novice license in 1959 and technician the following year as K5WQZ, thanks to Jim K5WLQ.  I also held a First Class Phone while working at a TV station during my college years. On graduation, entered the satellite communications field and let my licenses lapse. Discovered digital communications and never left, with several firsts during my career.  After retirement I rejoined the amateur ranks again thanks to Jim K5WLQ and Jerry K5AXN.  I made General in Nov 2015 and Extra in Dec 2015.  Finally got on the air again in mid-April 2016.  My first contact, much to my surprise, was DX with the Netherlands on 20m.  And ham radio has been nothing but enjoyment ever since.

[10/19/2017].  Sad news.  Jim K5WLQ went SK on 10/18/2017.  He will be missed.
