It seems this page is due for an overhaul as I have been operating more hf as of late and am spending half the month or more at my QTH in Maine. It is a long story but it would be easiest to qsl me on eqsl or qsl direct at my Maine address Tom Bowie 98 WoodMan Hill Rd. Minot ME 04258 Hopefully I will have some time to update my Bio as the station has progressed a fair bit...

I am a relatively new to amateur radio (first licenced as KM4OEK Oct 2015). My family had a fleet of vehicles with vhf lmr radios. In years past when I worked for them and there was a new addition the the fleet I often did the installation of the radios and other equipment. I sometimes wondered about the wide world of ham radio. But was discouraged by the startup cost of equipment. I began to think about radio again and am now slowly building my station up.

I am a builder and tinkerer by nature. I am a machinist, fabricator by trade and produce a line of parts for custom motorcycles. The idea of building antennas, and rigs combined with all the other modes of operation available to us finally drew me into the hobby. Having a machine shop on hand I have begun to make Call Sign Plaques under the name Comms Zero. Comms Zero began with just wanting a dedicated outlet to share my ham radio adventures.

My shack at this time is comprised mostly of an Icom IC-706mkii, Yaesu FTM 3200 (2m with system fusion), old radio shack scanner and an Mfj Switching power supply. The above gear is mounted in what I like to call my shack in a box. I found an old miller stick welder with a bad transformer. I gutted it and made an aluminum rack system to hold the equpment. I also have some Kenwood Tk780 lmr radios from the family business I have put on 2 meter. I would like to use one to possibly make a fill in digipeter. My mobile shack (when I first started) was comprised of a budget 2950 RCI 10 meter rig with a 102" whip on the roof along, a Yeasu 2900r 2m rig with a fender mount  diamond super gainer sg 7900. Now I only run the 2900r mobil. I made quite a lot of 10m contacts when I was first licenced as a tech while mobile. I have also been experimenting with the Linux Cinnamon Mint operating system for a shack computer.

Antennas I have made so far include a 2m/70cm copper j pole, 2m/70cm 1/4 wave ground plane, a folding telescopic dipole for 2m portable operation. fan dipole covering 80m, 40m, 20m, and 10m and an incredibly ugly but effective 1/4 wave rubber duck with counterpoise. All for use with my cheap Baofeng uv5r

If you mail me a QSL card I will send one back! I can also be reached at K4OEK@Yahoo.com. 73!
