About me   Getting into the hobby   Radios I run
Nine O'clock Net   Where was my picture taken?   In my spare time...

About me

I'm a program manager working in the Microsoft Malware Protection Center team to fight the 'bad guys' that author malware and try to make money off it. I've been in the antimalware industry since 2003 when I started out working on Lavasoft's Ad-Aware product while in college.

What got me into amateur radio?

Growing up in Michigan I had a fascination with the weather and wondered how I could help during major storm systems. You may have guessed already that Skywarn soon entered the picture and I joined in that, along with the county amateur radio public service corps (RACES/ARES/Skywarn). Grabbed my technician ticket in 2005 and off I went.

What do I run?

At home I have an Icom IC-9100 that's currently majorly underutilized as a 2-meter rig on a copper J-pole. I'm trying to figure out an HF antenna solution given the restrictions but haven't settled on anything yet. In the car is a Kenwood TM-D710 with a Diamond NR-770HB antenna, and in my backpack is a Kenwood TH-D72A with a Comet SMA-503. And at work is a Kenwood TM-D700 with some brand or other 2m/70cm mag-mount antenna, both of which I used back in Michigan in the car. I admit, when I moved to Seattle the radio gear stayed in the moving box until about June 2014.

Find me on the Nine O'clock Net

Now that I'm active again I check in somewhat regularly on the Nine O'clock Net on the WW7PSR repeater, and I host the net on Friday nights. There's some info at http://web.psrg.org/calendar/nets/ but the basics are: it's a social net; happens every day at 9am and 9pm unless something bumps it (such as the repeater being used by Seattle ACS for an event); and it's a lot of fun. We do take check-ins over EchoLink if you're afar and would like to stop in.

Where was my picture taken?

A group of us went to Paradise up in Mt. Rainier and walked up the trail for a while. This was taken around the time we decided to turn around. I haven't been back there since but I'd like to go again sometime.

In my spare time...

Let's see. I'm a major roller coaster fan (I'm all about the airtime) and make a few trips a year to get some rides in. I'm a notary public and help with that at work. Also at work we have an emergency response plan and I'm a floor captain for our floor in the building. Now and again I'm involved with non-profit organizations but at the moment I'm taking time away from that to bump up my knowledge by taking a continuing education course in project management at the University of Washington this year. Previously I completed their Paralegal Studies course which helped greatly at work and in my own personal understanding of law. And when I'm not doing all that, I'm usually fixing something around the house as part of that whole home ownership thing.
