WELCOME TO MY QRZ PAGE !

HOPE TO MEET YOU ON THE AIR SOON ... GOD BLESS & 73 !

I was first licensed as a Novice on March 9, 1982. I received my Extra Class in July of 1992. I am a member of the Maury Amateur Radio Club here in Columbia, TN. You can visit us on the web at w4ggm.org. If you are ever in the area, say hi on the 147.12 repeater (127.3 tone)

I  want to thank some wonderful friends, Billy KK4PTE & Melvin AE4FP for getting the tower and antennas up. You did a fantastic job! Special thanks also to Chris KK4WAQ, Gerald W4TOT, & Hunter for all your assistance as ground crew. Thanks not only for all you have done, but for being such great friends. You guys are the best!!

The newest addition to my shack is a Kenwood TS-590SG that works and looks great. Have worked a lot of HF phone with this radio running 100 watts, or Digital, mostly PSK31, JT65, or RTTY and 30 - 40 watts, into a dipole or Cushcraft A3S which you will see in the pictures below. For this radio and other equipment, I have to thank a very good friend, Todd WA5XX for all he has done for me. Thanks man for your friendship over the years!

This was my station a couple years ago. Hopefully I can get another picture up in the near future.

I still have a Kenwood TS-450SAT and SP-23 External Speaker with MC-60A microphone and a Icom IC-706 and SM-20 mic that are there for backups. My antennas are a Cushcraft A3S tribander for 10, 15, & 20 meters at 53' on Rohn 25 tower, a Cushcraft R5 vertical for 10, 12, 15, 17, & 20 meter that is mounted only about 10' off the ground. I also use a 80 meter dipole at aprox. 40' that I tune with a Drake MN-4 Tuner and operate most of the bands with that. I also operate digital PSK31, JT65, RTTY, and have tried a couple other digital modes, with these antennas. I believe PSK31 is my favorite. It is a lot of fun on the waterfall when I operate. For local 2M and 70cm operations, I use a Kenwood TM-721 dual band mobile for my base unit into a J-pole by W4TOT. For portable ops I use a Baofeng UV-5RE. I  also have a Cushcraft 13B2 above the tribander at 60'. It is vertically polarized to work repeaters & simplex in the Middle TN area. ALL MY PHONE OPERATIONS ARE DONE WITH 100 WATTS OR LESS ! ALL DIGITAL IS DONE WITH 30 - 40 WATTS OR LESS.

I recently lucked out and got a Drake TR4 with MS-4 Speaker/Pwr Supply. I owned a TR4CW in my earlier HAM days and could kick myself for letting it go. Other equipment I use from time to time is a Kenwood TS-520SE with SP-520 External Speaker. The receive audio quality is just fantastic coming from this older radio! Sitting to the left of the 520 in the picture is a Tokyo Hy-Power HL-1KA Amplifier for 1.8 - 21 MHz, but I never use it, don't even have it inline, I am able to make most contacts with 100 watts and a little patience, but "just in case", I have it for an emergency if it ever occurs. A buddy of mine tells me "Life is too short for QRP" hihi ... oh well I enjoy the challenge. I also have another HF rig from a while back. It is an Icom IC-730 that I used mobile several years ago, and even ran it for my base set up for a while back in the 80s. I have just hung on to it, helps me look back and remember all the fun I have had in radio over the years. Well, as most HAM "collectors", I have several other odd and end mics, antennas, tuners, meters, and etc. that I have accumulated over the years, but we won't go into all of that, hihi.... 73 de KA4ZDR

Here is a picture of my station back in the 80s . . . Running the Icom 730 back then with Heathkit tuner. Also had a Drake TR4C setup, wish I still had that . . . note the Tandy Computer . . . those were the days !
