Hello and thanks for stopping by my bio page.

I got started in amateur radio back in the early 1990s as a Technician in Salem, Oregon. I pretty much stuck to the VHF/UHF side of things playing around with packet and ATV early on. I owned a 40ft tower back in those days and after about 5 or so years I moved and the tower came down. I wasn't able to put it back up due to the restrictions of where I lived.

Family needs changed and hobby's went to the back burner for a while when raising kids and employment needs came to the front. Kids are bigger now. Job is fairly stable. So, this year (2017) I finally got off my butt and upgraded to General class. The code drop was a motivator since my earlier attempts at getting my 5wpm were a joke. Just don't have an ear for it I guess. Might try again later.

Planning on studying for my extra class here over the winter. Will see what that brings.

This summer (2017) I received a nice tubular crank up tower that needed some repair work from the widow of a silent key. Did a lot of repair work on it. Built a new base using the engineering specs from tower designs that were slightly taller and heavier. Dug a hole and looking to pour concrete here soon.

So, the new tower base was welded up with what I think is an original design. Got it stuck in the hole, centered and plumbed. Concrete ordered and hopefully the thing wont move between now and then!!

I applied for and received a vanity callsign in August of 2017. Not really sure what a vanity callsign was by definition and other than making a formal request for one that wasn't yours... So, I went from KC7LWZ to KF4IRE... So, how is that a vanity call for me? Well, I work in the fire service as a Training Lieutenant. Since the 7 wasn't available where I live I took the only one available that just happen to be from Florida with a 4. So, there ya have it.. All 'four' 'FIRE'... that's the vanity of it, nothing more.

On August 30th, 2017 I finally got my concrete poured. After scheduling it and cancelling it three times I finally got it done. At the height of this summers wild fire season I would get deployed and have to cancel the concrete delivery. I got on a first name basis with the concrete company manager but he empathized with my situation and spared me a little grace.

So, the concrete should be completely curred around the end of September 2017 that I can attached the tubular base to the bottom of it and start cranking antennas up!!
