Ham Member Lookups: 7066

I am a retired Air Traffic Controller with 27 years on the job; 10 years at Ft. Worth Air Route Traffic Control Center and 17 years at Tulsa International Tracon and Tower. I hold an Airline Transport Pilot rating and CFII and Part 141 pilot examiner certificates. Both of my sons are Air Traffic Controllers; one at Tulsa International and the other at New York Center.

I have been a ham since 1987 and N5LJL was my original call. I started in EM12 and quickly settled into 2 meter weak signal. After moving to EM26 I started over in 1994 chasing states and grids. My location in the central part of the country has proven to be advantageous for working 2 meters. As told to me by the late Gene Zimmerman, W3ZZ, I am the 12th station to work the lower 48 states on 2 meters terrestrially (all voice, no digital) with no EME.

The first 11 are:

I got into 6 meters in January 2015 and in less than four months earned VUCC (#2298), and WAS is just 2 states away (AK & HI, of course!). It really is the “Magic Band!” I am reading an Audubon book so I can learn about all the little birdies that live there. After a long absence I have returned to HF for the times when 2 and 6 are silent. I now have DXCC on 15 and 20.

All of my radios are 80's vintage Kenwoods; TS-711A on two meters, TS-670 on six and a TS-440S for HF. No menus, no programming. You want to get something done, just push a button. Done. Simple. My antennas for 2 meters are a pair of 13B2's side by side horizontally polarized, a five element M2 6M5XHP on 6 meters and a KLM KT-34A for 10, 15 and 20.

My primary interests are E-openings and meteors on 2 and 6. I’m not a contester but will always gladly hand out points and, hopefully, snag a few new friends along the way. I will always confirm a contact for anyone who needs it. I am on LOTW and all my contacts are uploaded daily. I also like the old fashioned method of qsl cards.

73's, Bob
