N8BC is the Club Call of the Lake County Amateur Radio Association (Ohio). (aka - LCARA)

Founded in 1978, LCARA has deep roots in the community and has dedicated itself to Public Service and advancement of our hobby. We are active in the annual Better in Mentor Days & Parade, Johnnycake Jog, Fairport Mardi Gras Parade, MS walk and The Race for the Cure to mention a few. We also have a dedicated group active in ARES who spend many hours a year underground in the Lake County EOC bunker and assisting the Red Cross and County Emergency Exercises and SKYWARN.

Please visit our Web Site: http://www.LCARA.org

The club call “N8BC” is well known during Field Day and LCARA has taken top honors on a number of occasions. On a local level we took First Place in several Ohio QSO Parties in the Club category with a number of our Members taking top honors in individual categories.

We maintain a Club Station at the Lake County Historical Society Center in Painesville Township where Members provide demonstrations of Amateur Radio for visitors to the Lake County Museum and for numerous Youth and Community Groups. We assist the Society at the Annual Civil War Reenactment and hold our Field Day Operation on the Society Grounds.

We are an ARRL Special Service Club and perform VE Testing the first Saturday of every EVEN numbered month at the Kirtland, OH, Library beginning at 11:45 AM.

Our monthly Membership Meetings are held the first Wednesday of every month at 7:30 PM local time, alternating between the Tri-Point Medical Office Bldg and the Lake County History Center with Ham related programs. We do try to have some outdoor meetings during the Summer months, so please check our web site for the current meeting schedule. See: http://www.LCARA.org/node/14

During 2016, our Club activated NS39 President Garfield's Home as part of the National Parks On The Air Celebration hosted by the ARRL. NS39 is classified as "Sensitive", so our operations are quite limited. More info on Garfield's Home can be found at: https://www.nps.gov/jaga/index.htm  (It's not much bigger than a large City Lot in the midst of a suburb of Cleveland, OH.)

Joe N8JKO made a video of our NPOTA Activations at NS-39 whch can be viewed at: https://app.box.com/s/6dij9m32nhsb8xatcfji11nx8lu14plq

This is "JIMMIE-G", our Mascot, who suprvises all of our Activations from The James A. Garfield Presidential Home. Jimmie makes sure we follow all the Rules of the sensitive site which is run by the U.S. National Park Service. He walks softly, but he carries a big stick!

We helped our hosts at the US National Park Service celebrate their 100th Anniversary on 8/25/16 with a Birthday Cake and beverages for Staff and Visitors (and us).

Holding the banner above are (L-R):  K8BL, WT8C, AA8OY and Site Executive Ranger Todd Arrington.

On 4/27/16, we activated NS39 and made 189 QSOs on 40 & 20 SSB. Our group consisted of WT8C, K8BL, AA8OY, WB8ZGH, KB8BKE, N8IJG, K8QXO and KD8F. Below, is a picture of our operating position with WT8C at the mic and K8BL logging at that time. (The hammer was for fine tuning adjustments!!)

On 5/25/16, we activated NS39 again (the 4th time) and made 311 QSOs on 40 & 20 SSB. Our group consisted of KD8BKE, K8LPC, WB8ZGH, N8IJG, KD8WBO, WD8OAJ, AA8OY, WL7BDO, WT8C, K8BL and Visitor G8EBM. Below, is a picture of our 20M operating position with WL7BDO at the mic and AA8OY logging at the time. Supervising behind them is K8LPC and WB8ZGH. Our 40M operating position was the same as above.

On 6/21/16, we activated NS39 for the 5th time and made over 300 QSOs on 40 & 20 SSB. This time, we had N8IJG, KD8F, K8QXO, KD8BKE, WB8ZGH, AA8OY, KB8ZZW, KE8PP, W8QL, WT8C and K8BL in attendance. We activated NS39 again on 7/27/16 and made almost 200 QSOs on 20 & 40M SSB. Our crew consisted of WB8ZGH, KB8BKE, KA8YHZ, W8QL, AA8OY, WT8C, N8IJG, KD8F, N8JKO and K8BL, plus JIMMIE-G. Equipment, antennas and setups were the same as shown in previous pictures. We feel really good about our visits there since the Supervising Ranger has been thanking US for coming out to their location and has invited us back whenever we wish, including next year.

8/25/16 was the actual 100th Anniversary of the US National Park Service and we again activated the President James A. Garfield Home NPS Site. We made over 200 QSOs on 20 & 40M from similar setups seen in the above pictures. In addition, our Club brought a 100th Birthday Cake and beverages for the Park Staff and Visitors. At the bottom of this page are more pictures from the James A. Garfield Presidential Home National Historical Site.

LCARA has been designated an ARRL Special Service Club for many years and recently received an updated Certificate that now hangs on the wall at our Club Station at the Lake County Historical Society Center.

The ARRL defines a Special Service Club (SSC) as:  A Club that exists to go above and beyond for their communities and for Amateur Radio. They are the leaders in their Amateur Radio communities who provide active training classes, publicity programs and actively pursue technical projects and operating activities.

With the help of many Members of LCARA with several years of Field Day QSOs and Club Call Operations during various Events, we have qualified for the ARRL Triple Play Award seen below. Congratulations to all who worked toward this fine achievement! It will be placed on display in our Club Station Shack at the Lake County History Center.

The Membership of LCARA has also qualified for ARRL DXCC and received the following Certificate through the efforts of several years of operating events and contests:

Members of LCARA have activated "Lawnfield", President James A. Garfield's Home in Mentor, Ohio, on numerous occasions as part of the ARRL's National Parks On The Air Celebration of the US National Park Service's 100th Anniversary. We have received the Activator Award Certificate, shown below, for putting NS39 on the air for the availability of Amateurs worldwide to gain credit towards their own NPOTA Awards. NS39 is designated as "Sensitive" and LCARA has recieved special permission from the Park Service to be an approved Activator of the Site.

Here is the Marker-Monument at the James A. Garfield Presidential Home National Historic Site operated and maintained by the U.S. National Park Service.

This is the Ohio Historical Marker at Lawnfield which describes President Garfield's involvement in the Civil War.

This is our 40M position close to the Lawnfield parking lot where Visitors can observe our operation and showing the NPOTA Banner obtained for our Club for the Activations. WT8C and K8BL are shown operating and our 20M position can be seen in the background.

Here, you can see our 40M Inverted Vee Double Bazooka on a 34 foot mast attached to the side of a Member's SUV. The 20M antenna (not shown) was an Inverted Vee Double Bazooka on a 30 foot mast on a guyed tripod.

During the actual 100th Anniversary of the US National Park Service on 8/25/16, we were visited and assisted by Scott N8SY, the ARRL Ohio Section Manager. In the picture below are (Standing L-R) N8SY, AA8OY and KG8IU while (Seated L-R) are K8BL and WT8C running 40M.
