I was first licensed as WN3DQS in 1969, and have had the call WA3DQS since 1971. After 42 years with the Advanced class license, I finally upgraded to Extra class in 2013. I am a 1975 graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, and worked in the mobile data (2 way radio) industry from 1977 to 2004. My specialty was the DADS package tracking network at FedEx - 56 repeaters on 800 MHz and three large dispatch facilities. Since 2004 I have been an IT contractor in Charlotte, dealing with network access control for several large corporate clients.

My present QTH in Charlotte is blessed with many tall trees in the back yard, so I have been experimenting with multi-band wire antennas since getting back onto the HF bands in 2011.  I have tried a horizontal loop, a folded dipole, and several doublets using ladder line and/or "twinax" to connect to a MFJ-976 balanced line tuner.  Currently using an OCFD (based on the W8JI design about 80 ft high) with an LDG autotuner.  A second coax fed dipole (50 ft high) is used for 20 and 17M.

Primary rig is the Yaesu FTDX3000, with the SDRIQ bandscope, Tokyo Hy-Power amplifier, and HRD 6.x software on a Win10 PC.  Using an IC-7200 for FT8 and other digital modes.  The before and after pictures below show that, to the neighbors, these are nearly invisible HF antennas. They seem to tolerate the swaying of the trees pretty well, and I can loosen the support ropes to prevent damage when high winds are in the forecast.  Also shown is my assistant operator, Gracie.

What's the use of having tall trees if you don't have a few wires strung in them?

73 and good DX,

Andy - WA3DQS
