I just moved to South-West Calgary (DO20xv) in October 2017 and I now also have permission from the Canadian authorities to operate as ZS6SVJ/VE6 (until end of March 2018)... so listen out for my QRS, QRPp CW on 7.023MHz - that's the only equipment I could carry with me.

For log entries with me from Canada, please go to my ZS6SVJ/VE6 page here: https://www.qrz.com/db/ZS6SVJ/VE6

The rest of my radios should arrive here early in the new year and I'm hoping to have my local callsign before the Letter of Authority expires in March... but I will maintain my ZS6SVJ callsign / South African license, this page and membership of the SARL, at least for the next few years.

I was / am only 18 QSO's away from that WAZS 200 award... so now I'll have to try to get those remaining ones from the opposite end of the planet. But, you know, if we hams were into easy communications, we could just fire up a computer and use Whatsapp or Skype or WSPR... ;-)

Anyway, thanks for checking out my page on QRZ.com... hope you got here because we had a QSO or because you were impressed by my awesome operating skills... HI HI... and that we hear each other again further down the log. Long live ham radio !

Here are some pictures from my RaDAR outing to KG44cd81 on 28 May 2017, which turned out to be a GMA summit activation of ZT/GP-003 (Cornwall Hill, 1665m / just over 1 mile high).

Only two contacts made, but I'm happy with that because it was CW and I was putting out only 300mW from a Pixie into a home-brew linked dipole. If you search for ZS6SVJ on YouTube, you'll see a video about this little outing.

Update 2016-01-01:

Happy New Year & 73 for 2016 to you all !

Hope to get many more paper QSL's in 2016 - I love them. Technology is great and all, but nothing beats getting a physical card. I use the bureau, but am open to other means of sending cards.

I do also upload logs here at qrz.com as well as to ClubLog, LotW, eQSL, etc. and I am happy to QSL by other means too - just email me at the address above.

My setup:

  • QTH is Centurion, South Africa - KG44cc
  • Yaesu FT991, FT101EE or FT501, depending on how vintage I'm feeling
  • Off-centre fed dipole for 10m, 20m & 40m, sitting about 4m above ground
  • Half-wave straight wire dipole for 80m, about 4m above ground
  • 0.25-wave vertical whip on a 5m mast for 2m
  • Output usually around 100W, although the FT501 can put out a bit more

I'm a night-owl, not a morning person... so you'll hear me on the air mostly around 18:00z to 23:00z.
