W4CQ Charlotte Amateur Radio Club, Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, NC

The W4CQ Amateur Radio Club meets Thursdays at 7:30 pm in the Salvation Army headquarters building located at 501 Archdale Drive, Charlotte, NC.

There is a permanent club station at this location with HF, UHF and VHF capability The club sponsors 3 repeaters (two on 70 centimeters and one on 2 meters).

Under the direction of Joe Ducar (KJ4QFJ), members from the W4CQ Amateur Radio Club set up their equipment every other Saturday in the Assay office at the Carl J. McEwen Historic Village in Mint Hill.  Their priorities are to provide information to the public about the history of ham radio, and to help those interested learn how to begin and progress in their hobby by offering support and hands on experience.

The Club is affiliated with the American Radio Relay League  (ARRL) and is a non-profit organization with a tax- exempt status with the Federal and State governments.

The Club participates in ARRL-sponsored activities, such as Field Day, VHF contests, Simulated Emergency Tests, etc.

During the Managua and Guatemala earthquakes, the Club station was activated and received and transmitted many pieces of traffic. W4CQ was in direct contact with a hospital in Guatemala and ran phone patches so doctors there could talk with doctors here in Charlotte and the Sanger Clinic to make medical supply requests directly.

The Club has provided many public service communications for various local agencies, such as the March of Dimes, American Lung Association, Charlotte Marathon, and the Red Cross.

The club call, W4CQ, originally belonged to Earle Gluck.  Earle was instrumental in getting broadcasting station WBT in Charlotte on the air in 1920.

Wilford L. Eury – N4MD is the station license trustee.

For more information about the club, send e-mail to w4cq@w4cq.us
