About Me

Licensed in 1982 when I received my first callsign G6LBB, then took the Morse Code test and acquired the Class A G4 call early in 1983.

After a long hiatus from the hobby due to work and family commitments I came back around 5 or 6 years ago.  Initially where we lived was very restrictive for erecting antennae so I did most operating /m.  Then after a long wait we found our dream home, and after what seemed an endless bureaucatic nightmare to complete the purchase we moved in May 2014.   After 3 years work it is now nearly as we want it, so plans for HF aerials are slowly taking shape.  We overlook Mount's Bay, Penzance and sit at a height of 550ft (170m) ASL with a take off in nearly 360° and we're less than 2 miles to the south coast and the Celtic Sea.

The shack comprises a Kenwood TS-570D and a pair of Kenwood/Trio 'elderly citizens'; a TS830S and a TS180S, with the 830 line up very nearly complete with the AT230, SP230, SM220 and MC50.  The 180S sits alongside a VFO-180 and MC50.  Both sound lovely on air!

Currently a ground mounted GAP Challenger DX with its low angle radiation is doing the business for DX with a varied selection of wire antennas including an EndFedz 20m and 40m EFHWs to choose from.

Now caught the bug for digi-modes so when I'm not working 40m or 20m phone I'm usually working all bands on digital; especially the newest mode of FT8.  Occasionally revert back to JT65, JT9, PSK31 and PSK63 when I feel like a change or when the FT8 section of the band is overflowing!   If you've not yet tried the digital you might be surprised at what you can achieve with very modest power levels and antennae!

QSL Info

Please QSL via eQSL or log/confirm contact on QRZ.com or QRZCQ.com and now using LoTW (as from October 2017).  Also will reply to paper QSLs either direct or via the bureau.  Thank you!

The SUV late evening. Location, location, location.... at SW43. IO70FE. At 178m ASL. My home county of Cornwall is the westernmost part of the south-west peninsula of Great Britain. My DX mobile location is less than 1 mile from the Celtic Sea and the Atlantic Ocean beyond that on our northern coast, and 7 miles from the English Channel on the southern coast.

The county of Cornwall covers an area in excess of 1,370 square miles and has a population of 535,000, a figure which expands dramatically in the summer months through tourism. The only city in the county is Truro.

Summer and winter seasons have their own beauty.

The town of St Ives was historically renowned as a major fishing port on the north coast of Cornwall. Its harbour is protected by a pier constructed in the 18th Century by John Smeaton. Pilchards were the biggest catch, the bulk of which were exported to Italy.

St Ives has a strong cultural heritage and is recognised as home to many famous artists and sculptors. Tourism is now the major industry for the town and St Ives achieved the award for the Best UK Seaside Town in 2010 and 2011. St Ives has a population of 10,000.

Another passion

My other hobby as you can see is on two wheels. The 'Italian Beauty' at the bottom of the page is for fun at the weekends, the 'Workhorse' is for the longer tours; like the trip to Millau in 2010.

GK4SEN

Prior to 2016, representatives of Radio Amateurs in Cornwall approached Ofcom to request temporary use of the RSL ‘K’ (for ‘Kernow’, the Cornish word for Cornwall), following the recognition of the Cornish People under the ‘Framework Convention on National Minorities’(*).  Ofcom agreed to this request and allowed Radio Amateurs with a Main Station Address in Cornwall use of the RSL throughout 2016. This station thus submitted an application for Notice of Variation (NoV) on 8th January 2016 for such and operated as GK4SEN until the temporary RSL expired on 31st December 2016.

(*) Further information about this is available here www.gov.uk/government/news/cornish-granted-minority-status-within-the-uk

Eligible licensees were able to use the RSL ‘K’ anywhere within Cornwall, including at an alternative address, a temporary location, mobile or maritime mobile.  QSOs were logged under this separate callsign and a temporary page was established on qrz.com.
