Aloha,

(From June 27 to July 26, 2017, Dave will be located in Discovery Harbour, Na'alehu, Hawaii, U.S.A. in grid square BK29EA as K6WDE/KH6. Aloha and Mahalo from the Big Island!)

(3/19/17) I am 'attempting' CW after taking the level 1 CW Academy class, so apologies if I flub our QSO. Please be patient with me!

K6WDE, (William D.) "Dave" is an Extra class ham. I earned my Technician Class in May 2011. Thanks to Gordon West and the Central Mountain ECS group in the Lake Arrowhead, Ca. area, I read the book, attended the weekend class and passed with flying colors as KJ6OXF! I earned my General license in September and went with a vanity call sign. In June 2012, I earned my Extra ticket.

I have the best of both worlds, my wife and I live part time (summer-ish) in Running Springs, California (DM14KF) and (winter-ish) in Discovery Harbour, Na'alehu ( BK29EA), on the Big Island of Hawaii. We are at the southernmost point of the USA, even further south than Mexico City!

My shack, in the 2nd bedroom (that I share with my wife's sewing room) has a Kenwood TH-D72A handheld and TM-V71A mobile and Baofung UV-82 handheld as well as my Elecraft KX3/KXPA100 combination, good for 100 watts.  A new acquistion is the Elecraft PX3 panadapter, a fantastic tool! Going portable and QRP with the KX3 means that the antenna is everything! In the near future, I hope to do some SOTA activities on local peaks in SoCal and on a few pu's in Hawaii.

Another acquisition is my Icom IC-7300, I love it. For the price point, you can't beat the price and feature set! For now, it has superceded the KX3 for portable use, it's just easier to hook up ...

While in Hawaii, I use a homebrew ladder-line fed 40m-6m, 135' delta loop and/or a DX Engineering 80-10 non-resonant doublet.  For portable use, I use an EARCHI 30' wire EF with a Jackite 10 meter pole, an AlexLoop (mag loop) or a SuperAntenna SP-1 to reach out! All have their strengths and weaknesses in a variety of conditions.

If you are coming to Hawaii or just need some information about these beautiful islands, drop me a line and I'll be happy to provide any and all information.

We are a friendly group of hams here in KH6-land, with lots of nets to check into. Bring your rig and have fun!

Check out our local club, the South Point Amateur Radio Club, SPARC, we are a no-officer, no-dues type of club. Check us out!

I am on PSK-31 (with Fldigi), D-STAR (via my DV Dongle) and Raspberry PI applications to amateur radio.

I am dual platform, both Windows 8 and Mac OS X Mountain Lion. I prefer the Mac though.

In 2012, I retired from teaching math in the public school system. I taught for 18 wonderful years in 2nd, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades focusing on math and science. Prior to that I was an Aerospace Engineer (17 years) with a company called TRW. My tech background is definitely being challenged in retirement.

Mahalo and 73,
Dave
