First licensed in 1992 as KB5UBW, I was living in San Angelo, TX, and on active duty with the U.S. Navy at Goodfellow AFB. My elmer was Glenn Miller/AA5PK. When I transferred to Hawaii in 1994 I was assigned WH6YC. I retired from the Navy in 1996 as a CWO2 Intel Technician and moved to western Washington, where I began a second career teaching in Pe Ell, a small logging town in southwest Washington. While there I completed my M.Ed and earned a school administration certificate.

In 2003 I moved to the Spokane, Washington area, where I have always wanted to live, work, and play. I worked at Medical Lake Schools for five years, then, courtesy of a bad economy, was laid off when my position at the school district was eliminated.

In 2011 I moved (back) to Tucson, Arizona to dispatch for the Arizona Department of Public Safety / Tucson Communications Center. This was the same job I held before I enlisted in the U.S. Navy back in 1977. Unfortunately I didn't complete my training program and was let go in January 2012. Looking around, I found it increasingly difficult to come up with a full-time job that suited my abilities and interests, and decided to open my own home-based business, Sterling Graphics AZ, making name badges, desk plates, and other assorted engraved items.  As the engraving business isn't a millionaire maker, I took a PT job working for the Oro Valley Sun Trans bus system driving the disabled and elderly citizens to their appointments, shopping, and casino. It was a fun and rewarding job.

In May 2013 I landed a job back in Montana, my home state, and took up residence in Cascade, south of Great Falls along I-15 and the Missouri River. It's gorgeous country. I'm working at the local school as their Technology Coordinator. It's good to be back in Montana. I hadn't been a permanent resident since before I started school, and I am a big fan of the University of Montana, home of the Grizzlies.

My primary interest in ham radio has always been APRS, and my primary APRS trackers are K7GPS-9 in my Chevy Colorado pickup and K7GPS-6 in my Harley Davidson Heritage. My other hobbies include R/C planes and helicopters, riding my Harley around the region, and N-scale model trains. I'm also experimenting with D-Star.

I have D-Star 446.525s and IRLP-7844 445.500s T100 on here at the house and monitor both regularly. Please feel free to give me a call sometime. My primary repeater monitored is 147.22 north of MacDonald Pass, west of Helena.

Just configuring a Raspberry Pi and DVAP on 446.525s. Have the WiFi set up to access my Verizon Hot Spot. Once I complete the set up I'll have a portable DSTAR hot spot anywhere I can get 3G/4G service. This is fun stuff.

HF rig here is a Kenwood TS-2000B, Aneritron AL-811 amplifier, and HyGain AV-640 vertical 6-band antenna.

Cell phone is 406-468-5130 and my primary ham radio email is k7gps.dave at gmail dot com.
