We are the Columbia Yacht Club Amateur Radio Society, a club primarily focused on the maritime aspects of amateur radio. We operate aboard a 372-foot, 7000-ton vessel known as the QSMV Abegweit, permanently docked at the foot of Randolph Street and Lake Shore Drive in Chicago, Illinois. We are a floating vessel (as long as the Lake Michigan water level does not continue to drop) but the ship no longer travels of its own accord. This vessel is a former ferry which transported people, automobiles and train cars across the Northumberland Strait between Port Borden, Prince Edward Island and Cape Tormentine, New Brunswick. She had a long and proud history of service up north. When retired from service, the ship was brought into the Great Lakes to serve as the club ship for the Columbia Yacht Club where we proudly maintain her heritage right here in Chicago.

At the present time, club equipment includes an Icom IC-7000 HF radio feeding a 140' Windom antenna strung between the ship's masts at about 60' above the water level. The location out in the open, above the water and above this massive metal ship provides terrific propagation. We are active across the bands on voice and digital modes using a Signalink interface. We especially enjoy checking in to the maritime service nets. Some club members living in nearby highrises may operate the station remotely from time-to-time.

If you're ever in Chicago, feel free to give us a shout for a cold 807, a tour and the opportunity to fire up the rig aboard the Abby.
