A New Jersey native originally active as wn2hxc with the Metuchen Amateur Radio Club (K2YNT, original trustee George Russell W2SJU) in 1968, meeting at the Metuchen YMCA.

A bit of the history of the storied Metuchen Amateur Radio Club, K2YNT, can be read HERE

I joined Bell Labs in 1978 and re-licensed as KA2CZU.

I was part of the Bell System from 1978 up to 2008, living in Monmouth County New Jersey.

Shack consisted of an Icom ic-735, Hammarlund Hq-170, Johnson Viking Valiant and a Heath SB-100, Radio Shack HTX-10 and AEA PK-232MBX on HF. Had an interest in tube radios and AM, left over from my starting days, almost went an obtained an old 250W Western Electric Broadcast transmitter for adaptation and use on 160m, but never pulled the trigger on the deal.

Was in the Bell System, including Bell Telephone Laboratories, AT&T Microsystems, AT&T Computer Systems,
AT&T Corporation, until 2005 when our entire division was outsourced to IBM still working on AT&T projects.

For 5 years I occupied the same office and working the same function while changing companies 3 times!

I am no longer an active employee in the Bell System, as I joined Comcast in 2008 and have been a part of their Test and Quality Engineering organization since!

Back in 2009, I downsized and sold all my gear for a move to the Grand State of South Jersey, with the uncertainty of living arrangements and lack of space.

Slowly have been adjusting and am transitioning back to active status!

In 2011, I purchased a Yaesu FT-817nd to be used to hit local repeaters, and perhaps some qrp dx.
However, the I found repeater activity around this new area low, and QRP lost its luster, so I sold it.
Other than the Bell Labs club repeater, I never really got into repeater activity, perhaps because I
was not part of any other club or network.

In 2012, I purchased  an ICOM 706 and strung a G5RV in the attic. Not great low angle radiation but at that height,
at least I can get it to load and radiate.

A few years later saw the "new" Chinese HT's being advertised and purchased 2 Baofeng UV-5Rs. Again, I started listening
on the repeaters on my daily commute but most activity seemed to be after I was home, so they basically sat.

Somewhere along the line, I bumped into a few Yahoo groups. First was for the Baofeng's, then I saw the worksat group.

Once on there, I started toying around with the idea of working a satellite with these HTs. Why not? I thought.

So, I built a homebrew AMSAT antenna and began listening to SO-50 passes. A few weeks later (it was a cold winter :) )
I built a 2 mtr Yagi from the same plans, and ultimately made my first satellite QSO!

I've since (re)purchased an FT-817ND and have been listening to a few of the linear satellites

I now also have an FT-736R

Listening for passing Satellites from the backyard operating position:

I've relocated the FT-736 to my new shack, from which I hope to try some satellite PSK-31 and APRS over the winter:

Family and Friends:

My cousin is Greg, W2CNP, which was the original call sign his dad (my Uncle) Mark Switzer
also from Hopelawn, NJ.

My brother and original elmer is Emil, W1GGM, now out in the Phoenix, AZ metro area.

A good friend who I wish was my Elmer is Carl W2AZQ. Carl is an antenna (and otherwise) genius,
long time member of techical staff at Bell Labs, now retired and down in South Carolina. Carl has
had so many radios, built, purchased, traded, refurbished, over the years that his (original NJ) home was used as
a test site for AT&T Wireless when they needed additional RF sources.
