I like to be called Gary. My approach to Amateur Radio is this: If you are not having fun in HAM Radio you are doing something wrong. There are so many different ways to enjoy Ham radio, from nets to contesting or maybe it is meeting up with people you have met over the air or at a Hamfest. Radio is such a diverse hobby that there is always something out there that will be sure to keep your interest as well as keep you entertained. It’s the HAM that makes the station and not the equipment. I’m active in the Morehead Amateur Radio Society, (we have a group site on Facebook) and I’m an ARRL VE and a W5YI VE helping get new Hams going.
I kept my first call. It’s KM4GOQ. If I had it to do over I believe I would still keep my original call. I suppose, I will remain KM4GOQ until the end of my days.
I am active on 2 meters and 70cm. However I spend some time on HF. I use Echo Link and can be locate at KB4AAA-R (Node 409221) I found that the digital modes were interesting but not as much fun as phone. I have chased DX. I have worked contest. I also work DSTAR. The things I enjoy most are Rag-chews and Rag-chew nets. I love to talk with people, but sometimes it’s fun just too sit and listen, or as I call it lurk on the frequency. I have been active in public service. I worked as a cop for 42 years, 30 years with Morehead State Police and 12 years with the Rowan County Sheriff Office as a Detective. I have been on the Morehead Fire Department for going on 51 years, I am a Captain and have been for over 36 years.
I spend much of my day surfing the web, trading, hunting, fishing, responding to wrecks, fire, and talking on the ham radio. I invite you to join a great bunch of folks on the Kentucky Phone Net 365 days a year @ 8:30 AM Eastern on 3.810 and in the evening @ 7:00 PM Eastern on 3.816. You won’t find a better net!
