My handle is Joe and I am located on the East Coast of USA. I live in the state of North Carolina about five miles from the beach in a town called Wilmington. I enjoy talking to people and operating digital. I especially enjoy propagation and DX. I currently use a Kenwood TS-820 tube hybrid for HF and experiment with wire antennas. I recently purchased a Yaesu FT-857D and am very happy with it too.

I also work mobile and enjoy QRP. While I live near the beach I also enjoy the NC mountains in the west part of the state when I can find the time to visit.

My shack is in the backyard. I typically install a farm of antennas to play with and then take them down other than the stealth double bazooka dipole for 10 meters (height of 30 feet & inverted V), a random long wire close to 150' (300' or 100 meters total length with the counterpoise), and a 20 meter wire dipole (center-fed, inverted V at 45'). I use the random long wire, with a antenna tuner across the HF bands. This wire is only 30 feet off the ground and runs horizontal across the back yard and into the woods.

I recently tested a 15 meter center fed half wave dipole, and a 40 meter dipole with nice results. I also enjoy an 80 meter dipole I feed with twin lead or coax. These antennas are not always up. I hope to experiment with some off-center fed (OCF) dipoles and get another permanent antenna in the air.

I wish you and your family well and hope to hear you on the band. --73, Joe

While I have not found the room for a beam, sometimes I will put two mono-band dipoles horizontal on an antenna switch. I set each antenna adjacent, and I have had nice results with these bi-directional center fed dipoles. It is nice to change antennas and direction with a switch. For example I can set one dipole horizontal for Europe/Oceanic and another for South Africa/Alaska. I have also had fun with one antenna North/South and the other East/West. Maybe one day I can put up a yagi or moxon. I typically cut to band for nice SWR and no loss in a tuner. However I have three tuners, an AT-200 for the Kenwood TS-820, a new YT-100 from LDG for the Yaesu FT-857D, and a manual tuner/switch from MFJ. While I prefer to bypass the tuner I appreciate what these tuners do.

I am also working on my portable/mobile station. I have a 5/8 wave mag mount for VHF/UHF from Diamond. I also have a 5/8 mag mount (Wilson 5000) for 10 meter. I have been experimenting with ham sticks with a lip mount for my hatchback, but they are very big and I cannot drive with them attached. I will follow up after I play some more with the static mobile. I also got a dipole mount for the ham sticks when portable. I typically just make center fed dipoles from insulated 14 AWG, but the dipole mount looks interesting. I am considering an off center fed dipole for my next wire antenna. I have had great results with the double bazooka coax dipoles too. The last double bazooka I made was for 10 meter and I used RG214.
