Don't laugh... I'm 60 years old and have only been an amateur radio operator since October of 2016. I got my technician class license then and have since earned my General and Extra class tickets. I have also joined a local VE testing group. A new club seems to be forming around that. I only have UHF, VHF and DMR radios now, and I fiddle with EchoLink. Hope to be talking to the world via HF pretty soon. 73s.

8/19/17  Attended the Huntsville Alabama Hamfest. Enjoyed it very much, it was my first time to attend this one. I picked up an

ICOM ID-51a plus D-Star radio. I spent the following week learning this new platform. It's pretty involved but I'm talking local and checking in on some nets. Haven't quite figured out how to use it on the OpenSpot yet but I'm working on it.

Update. On or about 6/22/17 I received my new SharkRF OpenSPOT. Setup was very easy thanks to a codeplug for my

TYT MD-380 from a friend. I also purchased a TP-Link router so I could use this setup as a mobile rig. I connect to the internet

using a wifi hotspot provided by my company. Now I can talk to the world while on trips. Works beautifully!

My wife and I live in Helena, not too far south of Birmingham Alabama. We have two grown children and one granddaughter. My son and his wife served in the US Navy. My daughter graduated from the University of Alabama.

I'm a big Bama fan, hence the RTR in my call sign.

I'm also a photographer, you can see my work here...  http://www.rwaltonphotos.com
