I am located just south of Belfast, the capital city of Northern Ireland.  My locator square is IO74cm and my WAB square is J46.

My training in amateur radio has been an adventure and it was through the encouragement and support of Antrim and District ARC that I gained my Foundation license on 4 June 2015, then on 4 June 2016 I passed my Intermediate exam. Travelling to Dublin, in the Republic of Ireland, I achieved a pass in the Harmonised Amateur Radio Examination Certificate (HAREC) on 2 June 2016 and finally on 16 December 2016 I successfully sat the Advanced examination following study with the Bath ARC distance learning programme.

My base station is a Yaesu FT-950 for HF.   Replacing a half size G5RV dipole with a Dual Beam Pro rotatable dipole has significantly improved my range of available bands.  Finally the Dual Beam Pro was replaced with a Cushcraft MA5B Minibeam.  More recently I have added a Watson DBD 4080 traped dipole which has given me 80M as a new band.

For 2m and 70cm I added a Diamond X510N mounted on top of the Dual Beam Pro, see image above, which is connected to a Yaesu 857D.  Both this rig and the Yaesu 817ND are used for portable use.  Visits to the nearby coast are great for escaping urban noise and getting those weak signals.

Another new experience has been using data modes, more specifically JT9 mode, which has given me a greater DX range. However my main interest remains SSB.  I have also discovered the joys of SOTA, chasing QRP portable stations and occasionally activating summits myself.  Walking, photography and radio go very well together.

I am also QSL manager for the special event station GB0GLS commemorating the work of the Gilnahirk radio listening station which operated from 1940 to 1978.
