Starting with the 2016 13 colonies special event, I am the QSL manager for the K2A New York 13 colonies special event stations. Please include an SASE for US contacts. DX stations should include return postage with a self addressed envelope. DX cards received without return postage will be returned via the QSL bureau. In 2018 this event will take place from July 1, 2018 to July 7, 2018 . All K2A QSL requests go to N2SQW. Certificate requests (not QSL requests)  go to KU2US (instructions are on the KU2US as well as the K2A QRZ pages).

The 2017 K2A QSL is shown below.

2018 will be my fourth year as one of the K2A stations.

Additional information about this special event is available at  http://www.13colonies.info/

I was first licensed in 1992, and upgraded to Extra in 1997. In January 2014 I retired from the New York State Office of Emergency Management (now the New York State Division of Homeland Security, Office of Interoperable and Emergency Communications) where I worked as a radio engineer and also held the position of New York State RACES Radio Officer. In retirement, I now hold the position of Deputy State RACES Radio Officer. The photo below was taken in the radio room at work prior to my retirement. This was at one of several operating positions.

I am a life member of the ARRL, and have been appointed to the position of Assistant Section Emergency Coordinator for the Eastern New York Section. I also hold memberships in the Greene County Amateur Radio Club, the Albany Amateur Radio Association (2018 President), and the Hudson Valley Contesters and DXers.

You will usually find me either chasing DX or in a contest. I participate in most of the ARRL and CQ contests, as well as many of the various state QSO parties. I have recently started "county hunting" as well. If you need Greene County, NY, please give me a call. I am also glad to schedule a contact if you need Greene County. Just send me an email and we can set something up. I believe that a QSL is still the final courtesy of a QSO. While I do prefer to have an actual QSL in hand, I also participate in the Logbook of the World. My QSL is good either direct or via the bureau.

My main HF station consists of a Yaesu FTDX-5000D driving an Alpha 9500 amplifier. I also have a Yaesu FT-1000D with a Yaesu Quadra amplifier on line. Transceiver line out audio goes to a Behringer mixer where audio equalization takes place, and is then sent to a pair of Fostex 6301B monitor speakers. The HF antennas currently include a Mosley TA-33M tri-band Yagi, a Gap Titan vertical, a B&W folded dipole, a DX Engineering 43 foot vertical, and a Butternut HF2V vertical for 40M, 80M, and 160M. A fairly extensive radial field is buried under the verticals. The VHF station consists of an FT-736R multimode transceiver as well as separate FM radios for 2M, 220, and 440. An assortment of VHF vertical antennas as well as yagi antennas for 6M, 2M, 220 and 440 round out the antenna system. A beverage antenna helps with receive signals on the low bands. Additional improvements to the 160 meter antenna are planned.

My 5-Band DXCC was awarded in 2008. Since then I have added DXCC on 12 meters, 17 meters, and 30 meters. I am now working on the challenge of getting DXCC on 160 meters.

The DXCC Challenge award was accomplished with 1000 band-countries in 2008. I am now over 1700 band-countries confirmed.

The Triple-Play award was earned in 2011. 50 states on voice and CW were done in a fairly short time. The digital modes were the most difficult to do.

Working all 50 states when they operated as W1AW/portable was a fun event during the ARRL Centennial in 2014.

In 2007 I won the Hudson Division Sweepstakes plaque in the single operator high power phone category. In 2014 I won the Hudson Division Sweepstakes plaque in the single operator low power unlimited phone category. This was also a new division record in this category.

In 2015 I was very fortunate to win the Hudson Division plaques for both CW and Phone in the ARRL International DX Contests. This was for the Low Power Unlimited category.

In 2016 I had my best placement ever in the ARRL International DX Contest. First Place USA in Phone and first place Hudson Division in CW. Both were again in the Low Power Unlimited category.

In July of 2017 I fianlly added the 5 Band Worked All States award. The last two states to complete this were Alaska on 80 meters and South Carolina on 10 meters.

In 2017 I received the plaque for First Place USA in the CQ WPX Contest. This was in the Tri-Bander/Single Wire Low Power Assisted Category.

Additional operating awards include:

DXCC on voice, cw, and rtty. I am currently at 332 countries confirmed (328 current) - mixed modes.

USA Counties Award - 1000 Counties

WAC on Satellite , Phone, and Mixed Mode

VUCC 6M and VUCC Satellite

IOTA 200 Islands, and IOTA North America.

If in a contest, or just casually operating, when you hear me on the air please give me a call. It's always fun to meet new people as well as to talk with old friends in our great hobby.
