Thanks for looking me up!

There I am on the cover of AR magazine.

Amateur Radio, June 2017

was first licenced in 1977 as VK4NCY (HF) and VK4ZCO (VHF), and returned to the air in 2013 after many years of inactivity.

Remembering with fondness,  Eric (Tex) VK4TX ; Cecil (Cec) VK4CT; Harold (Hal) VK4DO, and Lyle VK4LM - all now sk - who had the interest and took the time to encourage and teach a young teen as he joined the hobby.

My main on-air interests

  • Field portable for Summits on the Air (SOTA), National Parks, and VK Shires, mostly 40m & 20m SSB, QRP.
  • From home, chasing others operating /P.
  • From home in digital mode, espcially JT9/JT65.  I am most often on 30m & 40m, where the 'electronic fog' (suburban broadband RF noise) is usually thinner.

QSL Practices

I love real QSLs - the feel and the tradition!  If we have a QSO, please send me a card via the Bureau.  I will normally send a card via the bureau for our first contact, if your QRZ page indicates your participation.  Important for IOTA and other awards. Please keep the tradition alive!

I am also grateful for the ease, speed and economy of electronic QSLs, and regularly upload my logs to eQSL (AG) and LOTW, and would really appreciate your QSL via either or both of those channels.

I am less diligent in loading my logs for local field portable ops, such as SOTA activations & national parks. This is partly because 80% of the contacts are the same pool of 30 or so local VK stations, and partly because those activities and award programmes have well developed on-line logging tools which make QSLs unnecessary.  And mostly because eQSL (in particular) is rather unfriendly toward multiple portable locations.  It takes unreasonable effort to do it properly. If you are waiting on that particular QSL, just email me me a reminder, and I'll jump to it.

Callsign conventions: VK's especially - please pay attention - our local callsign discipline is poor! If portable in VK3, my callsign will be logged as VK3ANL/P. If portable in VK5, the call will be VK3ANL/5, etc.  Anything else in your uploaded log will not get an electronic match - especially in LoTW.

WSPR-mode QSLs - I like playing with WSPR, but am ambivalent as to being a true QSO, even if we log each other in consecutive time slots.  Yes, I know ARRL and others have conferred legitimacy. Good for them, I am sure.  That said, I have loaded some recent RX logs to LoTW, curious to see who else out there is QSLing. Very few, it seems. Drop me a note if you want to exchange QSLs for 2-way.  I will probably go along with it, provided we can match up a pair of logs no greater than 10 minutes apart. (Not entirely arbitrary; it is consistent with LoTW policy on time-matching logs for QSL purposes.  Any further apart fatally degrades its claim on being a genuine 2-way contact, in my opinion.)

AX3ANL: Special commemorative callsign permitted on

  • Australia Day (26 January) celebrating the arrival of the 1st European settlers this day in 1788
  • ANZAC Day (25 April) - Australia's main war memorial. Lest we forget.
  • ITU Day (17 May)

QSL fine via eQSL, LoTW, and the Bureau.  SWL reports always welcome. (Direct - please remember the cost of postage.)
