I was originally licensed as a novice in 1979 with the callsign VK6NJF. A few years later in 1983 I upgraded to my current full-call license. Back then I was active in DX, RTTY, the newly emerging packet radio and amateur satellites. I was also an active member of the Perth Radio League. By the mid-nineties work, family and life in general caused me to drift away from the hobby.
My retirement in 2015 at the age of 60 gave me the desire to get back into the hobby after being absent for over 20 years. I'm currently busy re-establishing, repairing and upgrading the equipment to fully get back on air.
My station (so far) on HF is FT-450D into a stripped-down and fully rebuilt TH3JR antenna. Also a homebrew 40/80 trapped dipole. I still have my much aged FT-101Z too...and it still works. An old FT-290R and a Boafeng GT-3 into a discone take care of 2 meters and 70cms for now. Also on the mast is a 137 MHz quadrifilar helix antenna for weather satellites.
Since my return, working WWFF National Parks has captured most of my interest with much unstinting encouragement and support from Phil (VK6ADF). Initially I've been a park "hunter" but I'm now doing a few park activations of my own. I also make appearances using WSPR, JT9, JT65 and other digital modes. Incidentaly no problem if you hear me on JT65 or similar and want to work me but we've worked before, feel free to call me again. I think "SRY WKD B4" is just downright rude..!!
Other interests that keep me amused include reception of APT weather satellite pictures, photography of merchant shipping and spending as much time as I can on the water in my little 18ft runabout.
