I earned my Novice ticket, WN8BSH, in 1968 in Monroe, Michigan, my General (WB8BSH) 4 months later , and my Advanced in 1969. I really hated that callsign.

I was an active participant in our county's AREC, RACES, and radio club.

Following my graduation from college in 1974 I helped complete Monroe County's first repeater by constructing all of the control circuitry, applying for the license, installing the antennas, and being its first trustee. I also held an FCC 2nd Class Commercial Radiotelephone license and worked part time for our local Motorola Service Station.

In 1975, while in my first real job, I was transferred to New Hampshire and my call was changed to KA1GR and used my Drake TR-7 sporatically.

Station is now:

Kenwood TS-990 for HF
Kenwood TS-2000 for VHF, UHF, and HF backup
Heathkit SB-1000 1KW linear
Yaesu FT-8800 for VHF and UHF backup, and another one for the car.
80/60/40 Meter dipole
40 Meter folded dipole
6 Meter J-pole vertical
Mosley TA-33-M Tri-Band beam with WARC option fed with 1/2" Heliax at 50 ft.
M2 6M5X 5el beam for 6 Mtrs at 55"
Vertical and horizontial beams for VHF and UHF fed with 7/8" Heliax at 60 ft.
Diamond X510 VHF/UHF omni at 65" fed with 7/8" Heliax.

I'm active in ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service) in West Rockingham County as an Assistent Emergency Cooridnator and Net Manager. I'm also a member of the Interstate Repeater Society and a control operator for the IRS repeaters. I earned my Amateur Extra in November 2008 and received the call W1UV a month later. I'm also the Official Observer Cooridnator for New Hampshire.

I just recently retired after 28 years as an Electrical Engineer for Digital Equipment Corp. (DEC) and its data networking offshoots and 2 years at Senet, Inc., at startup in Portsmouth NH who is building out a nationwide IoT network with full network management software. I occasionaly bail them out on a part time basis. Prior to DEC I worked at a number of now defunct tech companies which include Omni Spectra, Compugraphic, A.B Dick, and Wang Labs.

In addition to chasing DX I do some digital operating: JT65, and FLdigi and WINLINK for ARES work. FT8 is next on my list.
