Ham Member Lookups: 14182

A Wyoming native, I was in the United States Marine Corps when I was encouraged by my soon to be father-in-law N6VFU to become a ham in 1992 by getting the Tech Class manual for Christmas that year. I tested in San Dimas, CA February 1993. Received my Tech April 1993 KD6UBK. July of 1993 found me married to my lovely wife Kim the daughter of N6VFU. I moved from Anaheim, CA to Gillette, WY November 1999. Upgrades occurred in February 2000(Tech Plus) and May 2000 (General). I retained my 6 land call through all of that. I was finally able to enjoy my General in March of 2003 when a good friend set me up with an FT-101 (Thanks Arvid, K0ARV) which I still have and use. December 2006 after hours of intense study, (alot of it here on QRZ) I passed my Extra test and made the move to change the call.

Equipment: Kenwood TS-450S/AT (primarily digital modes)

Yaesu FT-101 (phone), also run the TS-450 with a Yaesu FL-2100B for phone as well.

A Yaesu FT-620B helps with six meters.

Favorite mode: FT-8.

Look forward to seeing you on the waterfall.

I have also enjoyed helping get a few friends, my father (KE7KBE), sister (KE7ZHV), brother-in-law (KF7GSA), oldest daughter (KF7CBC), and son (KI7PGJ) involved with Amateur Radio. I'm not too sure how much help I was, but my mother got her ticket as well (KF7BJM). Just look what my father-in-law started back in '92!

The N6VFU in question claims that he had very little to do with the blossoming radio family that I have, but I beg to differ. Without his encouragement, Ham Radio would still be some kind of voodoo thing like it was when I was a kid. When I was growing up, the only thing we had going was CB. That did get me interested, but when I heard what the 11 meter band had become years later, I wasn't impressed and had given up on radio all together until that fateful Christmas Day.

Some of the other things I do because of my Amateur Radio involvment...I build generators, but not just any generators...cheap ones. I have not once, twice, but three times made or helped to make power generating devices mainly to support my Field Day habit, they also come in handy as PR devices, and keep things warm around the house when the power goes out. I've also got a thing for antennas. After I built my first 220MhZ J-pole to use a radio I got from my father-in-law, I've been messing with the silly things ever since. Nothing serious, just stuff to get me on the air.

A promotion with my company has caused me to relocate to Ponca City, OK effective temporarily in March of 2014 and more permanently in June of 2014. August of 2014 I finally got my GAP Titan DX back in the air and a homebrewed six meter loop. June 2015 finally saw 20' of Rohn 25 adorned with a six meter 3 element beam reach for the skies. That setup has been fun to work with.

I continue to help build the Amateur Radio commmunity with my ARRL VE accreditation.
