I was first licensed as a Novice in 1981 at 15 years of age with the callsign KA2JSE. Shortly thereafter I passed the Technician exam which was given by FCC personnel at a local federal building.

I was active on 40m CW and 2m FM through the late 80's. While I was going to college and starting my career I mainly operated on 2m and occasionally 10m.

I married and have two wonderful boys. Between work and raising the children Amateur Radio took a back seat. I actually neglected to renew my license and it lapsed and was deleted.

In the Spring of 2011 I decided I was not interested in Amateur Radio and sold off most all of my equipment. In the Fall of 2011 while surfing the internet between "A and Z" I read an article about amateur operators assisting during flooding and a tornado. My interest was renewed in Amateur Radio just six months after I had basically "written it off forever!"

I picked a VE session and started studying. I drove about 85 miles to the VE session because I was ready to pass the test and get on the air! I passed the Technician exam in December of 2011 and the General class exam in January of 2012.

I am now "happily divorced" and of course am still active in the lives of my two children. I was a Police Officer for over 23 years and retired from a moderate sized city police department. I was forced to retire after an on the job injury.

I was issued the callsign KD2BIO when I passed the technician exam. I learned about the vanity callsign program and started checking call availability. Having been a canine (handler) officer in my employment I thought it would be fun to get a variation of K9COP but due to availability I settled on the current call KA2COP.

My goal is to study for the Extra class and obtain a shorter callsign for DX purposes! A short callsign leaves more room to say "you're 59 good luck in the contest!"

Currently I have an FT-897D with an Elecraft KAT500 antenna tuner. I often operate remotely from my iPhone or iPad via Commcat and Skype. I enjoy SSB, digital mode JT65, VHF/UHF FM, and D-STAR. IRLP node 8143 is now up and running. I recall about three CW letters!

I live in an apartment and have a small yard so my antenna erecting is substantially restricted. I currently have a Radiowavez G5RV shorty in the attic (now outside). It really isn't supposed to function the way I had to set it up but it is better than no antenna at all! I also have a 6m/2m/70cm vertical in the attic. Within the next week or two I plan to erect an end fed HF antenna outdoors. Hopefully this new antenna will let me operate with better efficiency. Believe me, it wouldn't take too much for there to be an improvement! I also suffer from a tremendous amount of "noise floor" on all bands but 2m/70cm.

I am a "man of few words" and spend 95% of the time listening. I enjoy comedy and no joke is ever "too soon." Although I have many hobbies and interests "Ham Radio" is currently at the top of the list. After the divorce I "downsized" most everything in my life! ("She" got most everything in the divorce!) Instead of a German Shepherd I have a Boston Terrier named Lucy who fills the gap when my biological children can not be with me. I have family in the area as well as MA and NH. When I visit NH I usually make a stop at the "candy store" to "touch and feel" all the great gear I want. I enjoy hamfests and attended NEAR Fest in April of 2013.

I have already revealed more about me than I care to but most likely you fell asleep at the second paragraph! I hope to catch you on the air for a QSO or on Twitter @ka2cop. 73 and remember "just because you have one doesn't mean you have to be one!"
