IF YOU HEAR SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING!
THAT's How RADIO WORKS!
It takes 2 people for a QSO.
Be one of them!
Be Careful ---- RF burnz...
Solarcon IMAX 2000 10-17M Vertical up 40ft.... wow nice..
INV "L" (ANT#6) 148ft long - 60ft VERTICAL - then 90FT Horizontal at 60'FT level.
ALL EFEDS USE 9:1 5kw BALUN.
EFED SLOPER (#3) is 58' long, top is 39ft high.
EFED Half Square (#4) is 124.5 FT long 40' up/50ft horiz/40' down
Optimized G5RV (#5) Flat top at 65ft (14 Meters) high
Quad/Loop is fed with 4:1 Balun at 09:00 position. EATEN BY SQUIRRELS! - RETIRED
SWR IS IN RED - Mostly under 2:1 - Tunable with just a radio tuner
RETIRED.... This antenna is now gone.... 15M loop removed. It worked, but I had to move the G5RV up, so it came down.
SWR IS IN RED -- nice huh?
Decided to build a DELTA LOOP for 20M because I had some left over parts....
75FT of wire/4:1 UNUN loop balun/some rope, and coax
Here is my newest creation
This connector was on my 80M INV "V" dipole.
SYMPTOMS? - Antenna performance on receive was steadily declining. I thought the bands were just getting quieter. You know how it is, but when my SWR meter was going CRAZY from 1.2:1 up to 5:1 !! and then back. Something was wrong. I dropped the antenna, cleaned up contacts. REPLACED these connectors. I should have detected the 'DECREASE in RECEIVE' performance sooner. LESSON: your gut is right.
FAILED DIPOLE INSULATOR - LESSON LEARNED - CHECK YOUR ANTENNAS ALL THE TIME!
JUST BECAUSE ITS UP THERE and WORKED, DOESN'T MEAN ITS STILL WORKING.
Again... Be Careful ---- RF burnz...
This is the back of my TUNER. It has those WINGNUTZ on the back for balanced/ladder line. Remember, when tuning/transmitting those are open connections with VOLTAGE. That's a wire for my external speaker to my TS2000 radio. It got too close to the wingnut and ARC'd right thru the insulation.
Lesson Learned: Don't take for granted those connections because they carry HIGH VOLTAGE when transmitting.
BELOW - 20M Dipole homebrew attached to wooden stockade fence, 5ft UP ! 1.02:1 SWR - you can't see the SWR meter move, unless its a 4" meter face. Look at the graphs below, no one believes this works.
ANTENNA MODELING and MATHMATICS IS THE START, NOT A SCIENCE. No modeling program can predict this result.
My new MOTTO - JUST BUILD IT! - If it doesnt work, build another, stop when it works.
In the flowerbed, I laid 8x coax along fence to shack. Approx 65'.
Sadly, this antenna is now retired. It had served me well over a year with literally scraps from my workbench.
SWR IS IN RED
This is how it's TUNED! - Move THE BUNGEE in the fence slats to
adjust the lenght. When done, tywrap it!
My homebrew 40M Dipole inverted-lazy V was talking to Europe everyday when band permitz, is now retired.
I took it down, it was 16Ft high (5 meters) (that's it) - it's in the treez....see how stealthy!
And this needs a little tuning as you can see below. Need to raise the ends to compensate. Will open up the SWR bandwidth when I do. Very small SWR window here, but VERY tunable on the band.
SWR IS IN RED
HERE's the HALF SQUARE - END FED 9:1 Balun (ANT #4)
WHAT KIND OF MIC IS THAT ON YOUR KENWOOD?
AMPS NEED LOVE TOO !!!
2014 like-New Ameritron 811H -
(4) new 811 Tubez - makes a difference. That's an antenna, not a dummy load. See the SWR.. it's into an antenna..
OMG.. people have actually asked me if that meter reading was done while the cover was off the AMP!.. NEVER EVER operate an AMP with the cover off.
Everyday radio is a TS-2000 - great radio! Sitting next to the TS2000 is my TS940, a fantastic radio for over 32yrs.
SQUIRRELS ATE MY 40M LOOP Antenna!
Really I have proof! This happened at 14:20GMT 01/28/17
Sometimes I help NQ2F and KD2RD contesting in Port Jefferson NY - and I actually got this!
John and Scott-- THANKS ! #1 in the 2nd Call area! #3 North America!
