IF YOU HEAR SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING!

THAT's How RADIO WORKS!

It takes 2 people for a QSO. Be one of them! Call CQ and start something!

These comments are my own........ This page is for RADIO and radio information, NOT my cat/dog/goldfish/children/etc..........

No pictures of my lawn, or my rock collection,   JUST RADIO. No pictures or stories about me climbing up mountains,  fixing my tractor, or my goat farm. I'm a pet lover, but ITS ABOUT RADIO.

If you were looking for a page of my favorite recipies, this is not that page. This is a page about RADIO and the stuff I make with it. ENJOY!

KD2HDZ -- HAPPY DANCING ZEBRA

If you call CQ, this will happen....... did we have a QSO yet?

Be Careful ---- RF burnz...

SWR IS IN RED - Mostly under 2:1 - Tunable with just a radio tuner

What does WATER INFILTRATION look like?  PIC 1 PIC 2 PIC 3
10/12/2017 This is rubberized antenna wire. It has a silicone jacket on it, and it's made for tree usage. It has been in service for 2 years on ANT 6, the Inverted "L" antenna As you can see, water has damaged the inside core. Completely tarnishing and weakening the integrity of the wire. Until finally it snapped. It's been replaced with THHN 10GA Teflon coated stranded wire.

 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx  Lightning vs. GR5V -- and the winner is... DETAILS AND PICTURES TO COME ?

======================================================================

RETIRED Below...... This antenna is now gone.... 15M loop removed. It worked, but I had to move the G5RV up, so it came down.

SWR IS IN RED -- nice huh?

=====================================================

Decided to build a DELTA LOOP for 20M because I had some left over parts....

75FT of wire/4:1 UNUN loop balun/some rope, and coax

Here is my newest creation RETIRED.... This antenna is now gone.... 10 months of service.

Created a 20M QUAD from these parts. SEE BELOW......

===========

20M QUAD LOOP ANTENNA Built 08/2017  --- I love this Antenna.... it really works.

RF BURNZ - PLEASE USE QUALITY RF CONNECTORS

CENTER INSULATOR ARCd

I call it a "Carbonarc"

NEW VS OLD SO239 DBL BARREL

This connector was on my 80M INV "V" dipole.

SYMPTOMS? - Antenna performance on receive was steadily declining. I thought the bands were just getting quieter. You know how it is, but when my SWR meter was going CRAZY from 1.2:1 up to 5:1 !! and then back. Something was wrong. I dropped the antenna, cleaned up contacts. REPLACED these connectors. I should have detected the 'DECREASE in RECEIVE' performance sooner. LESSON: your gut is right.

FAILED DIPOLE INSULATOR - LESSON LEARNED - CHECK YOUR ANTENNAS ALL THE TIME!

JUST BECAUSE ITS UP THERE and WORKED, DOESN'T MEAN ITS STILL WORKING

Failed Dipole Insulator

Everyone uses these insulators for just about any dipole you could build. Well I use them as too.  I built a 40M dipole (2014), and it was not working as it should for the last month. (Aug 2015). So,  I connected my antenna analyzer and it was showing that the antenna phase angle was 87deg, then 104deg, then 175deg, and was changing based on the WIND and temperature. The phase angle and SWR were changing as I watched the antenna analyzer. Not good.

Took the antenna down, got my ohmmeter, and checked the continuity between the antenna ground and the brass screw.   NOTHING. No Continuity.

Got the drill, and carefully poked some holes, the THERE IT WAS. The solder joint failed. The single brass screw is soldered to the wire lug inside the unit. As you can see, the joint failed, either cold solder, or who knows what. It failed SLOWLY. NO, I wasn't running a kilowatt! At most, 100w from the radio itself.

Again... Be Careful ---- RF burnz...

This is the back of my TUNER. It has those WINGNUTZ on the back for balanced/ladder line. Remember, when tuning/transmitting those are open connections with VOLTAGE.  That's a wire for my external speaker to my TS2000 radio. It got too close to the wingnut and ARC'd right thru the insulation.

Lesson Learned: Don't take for granted those connections because they carry HIGH VOLTAGE when transmitting.

BELOW - 20M Dipole homebrew attached to wooden stockade fence, 5ft UP ! 1.02:1 SWR - you can't see the SWR meter move, unless its a 4" meter face. Look at the graphs below, no one believes this works.

ANTENNA MODELING and MATHMATICS IS THE START, NOT A SCIENCE. No modeling program can predict this result.

My new MOTTO - JUST BUILD IT! - If it doesnt work, build another, stop when it works.

In the flowerbed, I laid 8x coax along fence to shack. Approx 65'.

Sadly, this antenna is now retired. It had served me well over a year with literally scraps from my workbench.

SWR IS IN RED

This is how it's TUNED! - Move THE BUNGEE in the fence slats to

adjust the lenght. When done, tywrap it!

My homebrew 40M Dipole inverted-lazy V was talking to Europe everyday when band permitz, is now retired.

I took it down, it was 16Ft high (5 meters) (that's it) - it's in the treez....see how stealthy!

And this needs a little tuning as you can see below. Need to raise the ends to compensate. Will open up the SWR bandwidth when I do. Very small SWR window here, but VERY tunable on the band.

WHAT KIND OF MIC IS THAT ON YOUR KENWOOD?

AMPS NEED LOVE TOO !!!

2014 like-New Ameritron 811H -

(4) new 811 Tubez - makes a difference. That's an antenna, not a dummy load. See the SWR.. it's into an antenna..

OMG.. people have actually asked me if that meter reading was done while the cover was off the AMP!.. NEVER EVER operate an AMP with the cover off.

===========================

See anything in this picture below?

This is the plate choke in an AL80B... Notice the burned cap/choke coil.

And here is my repair..  New caps and new choke coil installed. I do good work.

===========================

Everyday radio is a TS-2000 - great radio! Sitting next to the TS2000 is my TS940, a fantastic radio for over 32yrs.

SQUIRRELS ATE MY 40M LOOP Antenna!

Really I have proof! This happened at 14:20GMT 01/28/17

I really don't know WHY they ATE the wire, and it's good Wire! .....  This wire is the SUPERFLEX TEFLON COATED made for placement in TREES, where it was for the last 2 years.  Well, the FURRY varmints decided that it was time to start chewing on the wire and BLAM! -- no more 40M LOOP --- now the wire is too short for the loop, and I'll have to create another antenna (see delta loop above) from the scraps... They SLICED right thru this wire. 140FT gone.

LESSON LEARNED:

SQUIRRELS REACT TO RF BY FEEDING ON TEFLON

DUDE, are you on that radio again? I'm just askin because I'm trying to get some shuteye.

I watched on my backyard camera as the loop fell to the ground.

All WIRE antennas should now be created with 100 ton steel elevator cable.

The squirrels EAT right thru the 3/16" Dacdon rope. I can't use it anymore. Only as a drag line for the 1/4" rope now.

I have since moved away from 3/16" DACRON as a support rope. 1/4" is the new normal for all supports.

WHEN IS THE LAST TIME YOU CHECKED YOUR WILSON 5000 ANTENNA MOUNT? A little rust problem? This is one year! I'm going to spray with FLEX-SEAL in a can to rubberize when I'm done cleaning this mess up. Wire wheel here I come.
